The supercar, redefined. We are increasingly seeing performance car lovers across the globe who are impressed and enthralled by a different breed of car. Cars which offer the same blistering performance as you'd expect, but with similar fuel economy and emissions to the luxury family hatchback.

And as the Porsche 918 Spyder has proven, you really can have it all..

In the past, perceptions of hybrid vehicles have often been tainted. Drivers were confronted with a mundane driving experience, an impractical vehicle and ultimately an inefficient one too. Questions were raised about the viability of plug-in hybrids in general - let alone plug-in performance vehicles.  The 918 Spyder sets out to shatter those perceptions, in Porsche's own words by providing the initial spark and reigniting the 'old sports car dream'.

Just one look at the 918 Spyder and you can already see this truly is a sports car, and can feel the pulse of a vehicle that is very much alive. The newest in a line of pedigree supercars, it evokes the thrilling nature of the 2004 Carrera GT, and imparts the same sense of wonder as the 959 did back in 1983. It takes styling cues from both - but in reality this Porsche is a breed unto itself.

The 918 Spyder is hand-crafted by the extremely talented individuals at Porsche and it's in the chassis of the 918 where the magic begins. Each one is fashioned from a single-structure monocoque carbon fibre chassis. This helps to keep the weight extremely low, yet the rigidity of the construction keeps the Porsche tight and composed, even at high speed.

In fact, the 918 Spyder weighs considerably less than some modern saloon cars, thanks to clever weight-reducing technologies which are employed throughout the car and cabin. One of the more substantial parts of the car, the battery, is placed in the base of the chassis for an extremely low centre of gravity. The end result is a vehicle which instinctively reacts and feels like a true sports car. It feels like a Porsche.

Of course, it's also hard not to mention the power output, which stands at a staggering 887bhp. This is achieved through the potent combination of a 4.6 litre V8 engine and two electric motors which power the front and rear wheels individually. Performance figures are equally astonishing - with a 0-62mph time of just 2.5 seconds, and a torque figure of 1280Nm.

However - what really serves to impress is the emissions which stand at just 79 g/km, and fuel consumption at 85.6mpg. If nothing else, it shows that the 'old sports car dream' definitely still has a place in the future. The 918 Spyder is more than a car, it's a benchmark.

As part of Porsche's commitment to E-mobility, both the Porsche Panamera and Porsche Cayenne are available as E-Hybrid models.  These both utilise the same technology, have access to the same infrastructure, and have similarly striking performance and emissions to the 918 Spyder. For these reasons, E-Hybrid models are also ideal for high end business users.
