We've reached the point in the calendar where Shelsley Walsh plays host to a weekend full of top hill climbing action. With the season of racing well and truly underway the 20th-21st August marked an exciting return of Championship Challenge to Shelsley Walsh; undoubtedly the biggest event of the season.
Set in the heart of the idyllic Worcestershire countryside, Shelsley Walsh is the oldest hill climb in the world, where motor cars return year after year and continue to burn rubber at this iconic motor sports venue. Not to mention, the August race event at Shelsley is the world's oldest continuous motor sport event which dates back to August 1905, impressively pre-dating the first Grand Prix in 1906.
Stratstone welcomed our loyal club members to join us once again to experience Shelsley Walsh in true style. Greeted with an exclusive weekend packed with luxurious hospitality, guests enjoyed talented drivers, incredible car displays, speedy views and of course plenty of hill climbing adrenaline.
We invited guests to make the most of being a club member and to experience Championship Challenge with us in the most exclusive way from our track-side hospitality tipi. Refusing to be knocked by the English drizzle on the Saturday, the racing was in full steam and guests could enjoy shelter in our VIP tipi. Complete with a fully stocked bar, mouth-watering dishes and a relaxed atmosphere our tipi was dressed with twinkling fairy lights and offered the perfect spot to get into the racing spirit. With fresh pastries, breakfast baps and sizzling barbeque goodies on the menu it was a weekend full of treats.
An exciting range of cars were showcased in our cottage grounds over the weekend - a real opportunity for guests to get up close and personal to some of the best Stratstone offerings. This year we took three very special big cats to display- an original 1964 Lightweight Jaguar E-type, a 1961 Jaguar E-type, chassis number 15 and the exceptional, Stratstone Lightweight E-Type.
The 1964 E-Type Lightweight 'Lindner' was supplied to us by Classic Motor Cars. What's so spectacular about this car is that over 5,500 hours of skilled labour work has gone into restoring it.
Saturday 20th was qualifying day at Shelsley Walsh and with a busy day ahead of us, racers and cars lined up in the pits for last minute preparations before the runs started at 9am. Guests were pleased to see some great scenes and variety in this area, with a range of special racing cars getting us pumped for some of the fastest racing of the season.
We were delighted to display our extra special vehicle in the rectory at Shelsley this August. Making its first UK public debut at Shelsley Walsh was the Stratstone Jaguar Lightweight E-Type
. We promised that this car would not be a static museum exhibit and rather would be raced and admired - on this occasion it was certainly destined to be admired. Fresh from its debut in Le Mans Classic in July and one of the missing six produced by Jaguar last year, this incredible car attracted much attention from our guests and was hit in the grounds. Guests were excited to see this very special car out and about!
Sunday 21st dawned admist fabulous weather which was music to many ears and promised perfect conditions for hill climbing action. Stratstone guests enjoyed fantastic views of the track and the cars in action from our exclusive grandstand viewing platform. Placed in a prime position, it was fantastic opportunity to experience the adrenaline heralded by this legendary event and the perfect spot take in the unbeatable views.
With practice runs over, Sunday 22nd marked the real deal race day! This is the event day when each competitor has two competitive runs and battles for a top title in ground breaking speeds. We watched from our track-side hospitality as Wallace Menzies won the first run off in an incredible time of 23.06 seconds in his Gould GR55, setting a high standard for the rest of the afternoon.
We had another fabulous weekend of motor sports at Shelsley Walsh and enjoyed rounding it off with a spot of afternoon tea treats! We're already looking forward to our next event - The Shelsley Walsh Bike Festival.
The festival features great displays of historic, modern and race motorcycles, including 'Paddock Show Specials', live music and trade stalls. This event is a must for all motorcycling enthusiasts. Why not join us?
