The 4x4 continues to be a firm favourite with car buyers across the globe and over the last few years we've seen many manufacturers wade into the segment with their dual purpose offering.

Although the advantages really come in to play during the winter months making light work of treacherous winter roads, they can also be essential for those living in rural areas or anywhere where off-roading is required on a daily basis. However their appeal have now made them city staples thanks to their luxurious interior and sleek designs.

It can often be hard to find the right car for your budget, especially when it comes to 4x4s. However, all the models here are available pre-owned and in high specification for under £25,000 - meaning you can get more for your money than you might think:

Range Rover Evoque 4WD:

About: One of the most desirable SUVs on the market today, used Range Rover Evoque models are now available under the £25,000 mark. The Range Rover Evoque came on to the scene in 2011, and made a huge impact thanks to its concept car-style appearance and feature-packed interior.

Features: Standard equipment is plentiful, with striking 18-inch alloy wheels, and eight-inch touch screen which controls the DAB digital radio, Bluetooth, MP3 compatibility and USB plug-in. Heated front seats and leather steering wheel are also included.

The Evoque is impressive under the bonnet too, and in 4WD guise the Evoque is an extremely competent off-road vehicle. Borrowing from its Land Rover roots, the Evoque features the coveted Terrain Response system, which automatically detects surfaces on the ground ahead and adjusts ride settings accordingly. The 2.2 Litre diesel engine is a perfect match, pulling strongly from low revs to provide the torque you need for both town and country driving.

BMW X3 xDrive:

About: £25,000 will net you a stylish and well-equipped version of BMW's highly capable X3 SUV. The Mk.2 model, launched in 2010, has style but also practicality on its side to make this a real family car with four-wheel traction.

Features: With four-wheel-drive as standard, the BMW X3 makes an excellent choice for any budding off-roader. Other standard equipment includes climate control, Bluetooth connection and Auxiliary input controlled from the 6.5 inch screen. Nevada leather upholstery and BMW's iDrive function complete the checklist for a premium-feeling car.

The standard xDrive system from BMW gives the X3 a natural off-road prowess. Xdrive distributes power to the front and rear tyres as necessary, ensuring maximum performance on even wet and snowy surfaces. It also shares the fantastic underpinnings of the BMW 3-Series, meaning to this day it remains one of the best handling and dynamic SUVs available.

MINI Countryman ALL4:

About: The Countryman is the largest MINI to date. Taking all the fun of the MINI hatch, the Countryman repackages it into a practical crossover guise that makes the MINI more versatile than ever. For under £25,000 it's easy to find a top-specification Countryman SD with plenty of standard equipment, and ALL4 all-wheel-drive.

Features: With climate control, auxiliary input and Bluetooth connectivity, the Countryman Cooper is generously equipped. Other features on this model include alloy wheels, sports seats and the MINI Connected system which allows you to pair your phone with the car.

The Countryman ALL4 offers an AWD experience with all the driving fun of a MINI. Sharp cornering and responsive handling are a hallmark of the MINI range and the Countryman certainly lives up to its name. The 2.0 litre diesel in the Cooper D offers up to 67.3 mpg, but this excellently capable engine also has plenty of torque, too.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class:

About: The Mercedes-Benz M-Class is a rugged yet luxuriously equipped SUV, which handles being off-road just as well as being on it. The M-Class is 4x4 as standard, meaning every model is capable of tackling the outdoors with aplomb. An Approved Used example of the M-Class represents terrific value.

Features: Equipment on the popular, second generation M-Class includes Parktronic front and rear parking sensors, automatic windscreen wipers and automatic headlights, Easy-Pack powered tailgate,  Bluetooth connectivity, and an auxiliary input. The front seats are heated as standard, and boast a four-way electric lumbar support. Other standard features include cruise control, climate control and full electric windows.

Popular engines in the range include the ML 300 CDi, a 3.0 litre V6 diesel producing 201 bhp. A powerful 500Nm of torque makes this engine is ideal for towing with up to 3500kg capacity, and yet achieves over 30mpg combined. Despite being well suited to off -road driving, the chassis of the M-Class is extremely composed, and remains comfortable on the road. 

Audi Q3 Quattro


About:  The 'Quattro' marque is instantly recognisable after it was the first to feature Audi's famed 4WD system. In rally form, the Quattro went on to win two World Championship Rally titles in 1982 and 1984 with a total of 23 WRC victories. The Q3 Quattro SUV features a modern equivalent of the same system.

Features: The Q3 is a stylish, compact SUV with a wide array of options. Available in three different trim levels, standard equipment on the Q3 includes 17-inch alloy wheels, aluminium roof rails and dynamic suspension for excellent off-road composure.

On the inside, the Q3 doesn't forgo any luxuries thanks to dual-zone climate control, leather multifunction steering wheel, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers. All engines come with four-wheel drive as standard. The most frequently-specified engine is the 2.0 TDI, which offers 340Nm torque for any towing or off-road application. It achieves over 60mpg and can reach 60mph in well under ten seconds.
