Mercedes-Benz are celebrating 30 years of their fabled 4MATIC system, which has seen motorists not just in Britain but across the globe survive the harsh winter conditions and continue on their journeys where others couldn't.

4MATIC is a low-key four-wheel-drive system which provides full traction from all four wheels when needed. AS well as being extremely useful on wet or icy roads, the system provides added traction benefits off-road too.

The Mercedes-Benz SUV range of vehicles all offer 4MATIC. Here we take a look at the updated range which includes a number of new models for 2016:

The Mercedes-Benz GLC

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is a luxurious medium sized SUV. All-new from the ground up, the GLC features a lightweight aluminium body shell which lends itself to both the efficiency and the agility of the GLC. The car promises a responsive, engaging drive coupled with the new nine-speed automatic gearbox for slick transitions whether off the road or on it.

The GLC is also extremely practical, with a 550-litre boot space underpinning a very spacious car with a premium interior. The 4MATIC system is standard across the GLC-Class range, available alongside options such as the Air Body Control air suspension, for maximum comfort and versatility.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA

The GLA-Class is the crossover in the Mercedes-Benz range, and at just 1,494mm tall is the most compact addition to their SUV line up. Blending the benefits of a hatchback with the capability of an off-road vehicle, the GLA is ideal for day-to-day driving. The low ground clearance offers excellent ride comfort, much similar to that in the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

The already bold styling can be enhanced with the AMG line trim, whilst models are also available with 4MATIC to give additional off-road ability. The luxurious interior offers ample room for up to five passengers, with a spacious 421-litre boot capacity. The GLA is certainly a tempting option.

Mercedes-Benz GLE

The newest iteration of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the original was a trendsetter for the modern, premium SUV. The GLE continues this with a plush cabin and capacious interior, making it the ideal place to be on long journeys. THE GLE features an intuitive tablet touch screen which makes light work of the extensive features list.

A robust design benefits from updated styling, with visual cues which now tie it in to the rest of the SUV range. Every GLE models features the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system as standard, though new options such as AIRMATIC ADS and an ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM allow the car to glide over surfaces as a car with a much smaller footprint.

Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe is a robust SUV with the elegance of a coupe. A muscular stance, the GLE Coupe gives off a sporting impression with a taut silhouette and sweeping lines. Luckily, the driving feel matches up to expectations, with switchable driving modes that get the best out of the GLE, yet all the advantages of a high driving position.

The interior impresses too, sharing the similar sense of spaciousness and luxury as its larger brother. Every GLE Coupe is available with the 4MATIC system, ensuring the best traction possible no matter the weather.

Mercedes-Benz GL

The Mercedes-Benz GL is large, seven-seat SUV which majors on practicality and space. An unmatched road presence, the GL sports an imposing silhouette and updated styling.

Inside, an opulent interior boasts a high level of standard equipment, including heated seats, an electric tailgate and satellite navigation. Of course, with seven seats at your disposal, the interior space of the GL is extremely versatile too. All five rear seats fold away electrically, giving a maximum load space of 2,300 litres.

The standard air suspension system means that even for such a large car, the GL glides over road surfaces, even with six passengers. The system also lowers the suspension when the car is parked up for easy access.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

In production since 1979, the G-Class (or G-Wagen) has created a legacy all of its own. A unique look which harks back to the military history of the G-Class, it remains as visually striking as ever. It is able to cross 600mm of standing water, and boasts three separate locking differentials for the most traction possible. As much at home in the town as it is off-road, it offers true go-anywhere ability.

The G-Class also offers unrivalled personalisation, with near-infinite levels of interior customisation and interior specification. The G-Class has been thoroughly redesigned for 2016, including modern creature comforts such as satellite navigation.
