The MINI Hatch that is so widely loved by the UK population has never been renowned for its immense levels of practicality. But then again, it is utterly superb in every other area where it matters.
Meanwhile, on the flip side of the coin, the majority of family estates could be accused of being a little bit vanilla. Ultimately, that is where the MINI Clubman comes in; a practical everyday family car that offers retro styling and an engaging driving experience.
Having impressed since its initial launch in 2007, it is no surprise to see that MINI have improved on the Clubman over the years, with the latest iteration proving to be the best one yet.
Design and Practicality
The Clubman's silhouette is easy to distinguish from any other rival in the same segment, with the brand's instantly recognisable design cues there for all to see. However, it is features such as the elongated roof line and split rear doors that really make the Clubman a special vehicle.
More than just form over the function, those split doors grant superior access to the boot, which can be extended from the standard 360-litres up to 1,250-litres with the rear seats folded flat. Inside, there is plenty of leg and headroom for passengers in both the front and back.
Meanwhile, the easy to access Isofix anchor points and wide-opening doors make it a doddle to fit a child's seat.
Technology and Safety
Coming as standard across the range are the LED lights, which feature on the front and rear of the car. The LED headlamps include LED modules, which grant better vision when using low and high beam. Also available are the adaptive LED headlamps with Matrix function, which adjust their brightness according to the surrounding conditions.
Inside, the infotainment system is cleverly integrated into the circular bezel that used to accommodate the speedometer on older models. The system boasts a 6.5-inch screen that is crisp to the eye and comes with features such as MINI Navigation and Apple CarPlay as standard. Drivers will also benefit from rain sensors and automatic headlight activation across the range.
MINI Connected Services are also standard, as well as Intelligent Emergency Call (E-Call) and Bluetooth.
Engines and Performance
MINI Clubman is available with two different petrol engines, both of which offer exceptional economy and accessible performance.
The Clubman Cooper makes use of a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder unit. Although it may not sound particularly big, with 136 bhp it does feel peppy. Emissions are remarkably low, and this engine can return up to 47.1mpg on a combined cycle.
For those who want more speed, there is the Clubman Cooper S. This model recruits a 2.0-litre engine to get it down the road. And with 178bhp on tap, it certainly does not hang about. Expect up to 44.8mpg on a combined cycle from this unit.
For those who love the thrill of driving is the John Cooper Works (JCW) model, which boasts a hefty 306bhp. This model benefits from sports suspension, bolder exterior features, bigger brakes, and a throatier exhaust note.
