The BMW 2-Series Active Tourer is a ground-breaker. It's not just the first ever car that BMW have produced with front wheel drive, it's also their first Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV).
Believe it or not, it's built on the same upcoming platform as the new Mini range, which gives credit to just how adaptable it is. There are even plans to use the same platform on the upcoming range of next-generation BMW vehicles including the X1 and 1 Series hatchback.
For now though, the 2-series MPV is the only BMW vehicle to make use of it, and has done so with impressive results. The Active Tourer manages to be engaging and responsive to drive yet practical enough to rival a huge cross-section of hatchbacks and small SUVs.
It shares not only the same platform but also borrows two frugal engines from the Mini range: a punchy 1.5 litre engine from the Cooper hatch and a 2.0 litre diesel from models such as the Countryman. Smooth power delivery and 330nm of torque propels the Active Tourer to 60 in 8.9 seconds, making light work of either city driving or motorway cruising - thanks in no small part to the Mini platform.
Practicality as standard
Practical touches come in the form of comfortable seating for five, whilst the back seats can be easily dropped to provide over 1,500 litres of rear storage space, even though the standard setup also accommodates a large 468 litre boot.
Practicality is a hallmark of the MPV sector, and is what makes a premium MPV so appealing to a number of different markets. The comfortable passenger space and loading volumes make the 2-Series suited for a huge range of lifestyles - from dog owners and golf enthusiasts to families looking for a hatchback with more space.
The increased internal capacity of the 2-series also makes access much easier and simpler. Seating is extremely adaptable both in the front and rear, with a wide range of adjustments for the driver allowing supreme visibility and maximum comfort.
Quality ride, quality inside
It has been praised by numerous outlets including Auto Express and WhatCar for being refined even at high speeds, whilst the chassis is stiff and agile thanks to a solid platform ensuring it remains a fun drive- an issue that many MPV's suffer from.
Looks are also a big positive, and this BMW benefits from stylish cousins in the form of the 2-Series Coupe and the X3, whose aesthetic influence has defined a dynamic and chiselled face sculpted to complement the rest of the range.
The model has also been praised for its quality, with upmarket materials used in the spacious cabin layout. A 6.5 inch colour screen comes as standard with the BMW i-Drive system, and other generous standard features include 16-inch alloy wheels and automatic lights and wipers.
In terms of efficiency, the petrol and diesel engines offer a great return with 57.6mpg and 68.9mpg respectively, which is impressive for a car in this sector.
A great first addition to BMW's MPV credentials, the 2-Series Active Tourer remains extremely assured despite being the first of its kind, and is available from your nearest Stratstone BMW dealer.
