Electric cars are becoming more and more popular, which is a good thing. But what about hybrid cars? After all they keep the internal combustion engine we are all familiar with but work in harmony with electricity too, whilst reducing emissions, which again is positive news.

Rewind a decade or so and the electric or hybrid car scared many car buyers, especially petrolheads who were probably thinking that we are all going to be driving around in slow, plain-looking electric and hybrid cars.

The truth is, with the enhancements with technology, especially in the automotive industry, hybrid and electric cars are some of the fastest cars out there, and give petrolheads and car buyers a positive outlook for the future of the motor car. We decided to put together a list of the 'Best Used Luxury and Premium Hybrid Cars'. Learn more about our favourites below.

Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid

Porsche have helped change the stereotype about electric and hybrid cars being dull, slow and boring.

This is thanks to the stunning Porsche 918 Spyder hypercar. The car's hybrid technology has since been used on other models in the Porsche range, including the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

Available as a regular Panamera or a more practical Sport Turismo, the car offers equally impressive performance and luxury, with 62mph taking just 3.4 seconds whilst offering up to 80mpg. You can even get around 22 miles on full electric mode, in what is essentially a supercar smashing hybrid.

MINI Countryman Plug-In Hybrid

With retro styling and an iconic go-kart like driving experience, the modern MINI is a runaway hit, especially with their characterful engine choices. But can a hybrid MINI be just as good?

The Countryman Plug-In Hybrid is the first model to be offered by MINI with electric power, and it's a rather good one too! Offered in the more spicy Cooper S guise means it's certainly not slow, hitting 62mph from standstill in just 6.8 seconds. On electric power alone you get you around 18 miles too.

Being a Countryman means it's the most practical MINI too, and with SUVs showing no sign of their popularity slowing down, the MINI Countryman Plug-In Hybrid is a superb used buy. The car even proved to leave a lasting impression on our in-house petrolhead - which you can find out more about here.

BMW i8

The BMW i8 is one of the most futuristic-looking production cars ever made, and was first offered for sale in 2014.

Available as a Coupe or Roadster (made available in 2018), the i8 looks super space age in either guise. The crazy part of this supercar/sportscar is that it is a hybrid. Using a 1.5-litre mid-mounted petrol engine producing 231bhp, it is accompanied by a 143bhp electric motor too. The petrol engine drives the reae wheels, whilst the electric motor drives the front wheels.

The 0-62mph sprint takes just 4.3 seconds for the i8 Coupe and 4.5 seconds for the i8 Roadster, with a top speed (where legal) of 155 mph (limited), like many BMW models. This hybrid 'supercar' will also return an ultra-impressive 128mpg!

Lexus RX 450h

As the luxury division of Toyota, Lexus make some properly smart and luxurious cars. And with Toyota's huge push on electric hybrid vehicles (they are responsible for the Prius after all) it comes as no surprise that Lexus offer a luxury SUV in the form of the RX 450h.

Offering a comfortable, well-built SUV with lots of clever technology to enhance the ownership experience there is plenty to like. With just over 300bhp on supply from the engine/electric mix - in which it uses both at the same time, means the 450h doesn't run on electric alone for any considerable distance - with the positive being, you don't have to plug it in to charge the motor.

Returning around 50mpg, which is great considering this is a large, luxury, practical SUV, it's also fairly quick too, completing 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds.

Volkswagen Golf GTE

You simply can't ignore just how good the Volkswagen Golf is. Legendary models such as the GTI, VR6, R32 and R, along with more humble versions like the BlueMotion and TDI have meant the Golf has been a huge success for the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer since its birth in the '70s.

Therefore, it was only a matter of time until they launched a Golf with some hybrid magic to complement the back catalogue. Introducing the Golf GTE, a Golf with a 1.4-litre petrol engine, paired with an electric motor.

In full electric mode you'll get 20 miles, perfect for a regular commute, whilst combined you'll get around 60mpg. Being a GTE - the clue is in the name, offering some comparable performance to the legendary Golf GTI - 0-62mph only takes 7.6 seconds, a mere second or so behind the iconic GTI.

Although electric cars and hybrid cars can be quite pricey, when compared to their petrol and diesel counterparts, the beauty of a used version is that you are set to save a substantial amount when compared with new.

With the growing popularity of all cars using electricity in some form or another, maybe this is the perfect time to invest in a hybrid vehicle. Using the handy filter on the Stratstone website, you too can browse electric/hybrid cars, simply by selecting this fuel type when browsing our used premium and luxury cars.
