New BMW 4 Series Coupé

An all-new design, even more luxury and increased driving thrills

Introducing the 4 Series Coupé

The first generation 4 Series was a roaring success for BMW, because it offered exceptional driving dynamics in a stunning package. In essence, it was everything a BMW coupé should be. Now, six years after the introduction of the original, BMW have announced that an all-new 4 Series Coupé will be launched in October 2020. And what is more, it is bringing a new design language with it.

The Bavarian giants have also announced that the upcoming 4 Series Coupé will be the first BMW to be made available with the specialised M Sport Pro Package. In addition, mild-hybrid technology will feature on the diesel engines and flagship petrol model.

Keep on reading to learn more about the points above and why the all-new car is set to be a game changer.

Design and Practicality

Perhaps the most noticeable change over the outgoing model is the revised BMW trademark kidney grille, which now sits upright and connects at the centre. The new look reprises a design from the brand's past, but delivers it with a contemporary twist.

The new car is 128 mm longer and 27 mm wider than its predecessor, and boasts a wider track width (the wheels have been pushed outwards) on the front and rear. These changes have resulted in an interior that is more spacious, while improving grip and stability when driving.

Inside is typical of a modern BMW, with high-quality surfaces complementing the driver-focused layout. Newly developed heated front sports seats feature as standard, while the LED ambient lighting enhances the premium sensation throughout the cabin.

Practicality has not been ignored with the car featuring a 40:20:40 split backrest, larger storage compartments, and a boot capacity of 440 litres.

Interior and Technology

Making its debut is BMW's M Sport Pro package, which improves performance courtesy of a selection of M Performance parts.

Driving enthusiasts will no doubt enjoy the Sprint function that provides additional bursts of speed when SPORT mode is activated. Additional features include M Sport brakes, 19-inch M light alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and M seat belts.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional infotainment system consists of a high-resolution 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch central screen. The system offers seamless menu navigation thanks to the familiar iDrive Controller, multifunction steering wheel, voice control, and even the optional BMW gesture control.

Smartphone connectivity comes in the form of Apple CarPlay, which has now been joined by Android Auto.

Other standard driver aids and safety technologies include:

  • Front Collision Warning, Speed Limit info and Lane Departure Warning
  • Steering and Lane Control Assistant
  • Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant

Economy and Performance

BMW 4 Series Coupe, Driving, Rear

All-new 4 Series Coupé will be launched with a choice of three petrol engines and a sole diesel, with the latter set to be joined by two more options in March 2021.

Each engine will be paired with an 8-speed steptronic gearbox as standard, while BMW's intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive system is also available as standard on the larger engines (optional on other models).

The three petrol units are headed up by the M440i xDrive, which will produce a staggering 374 bhp and sprint from 0-62 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The smaller 420i and 430i will produce 184 and 258 bhp respectively, while returning between 46.3 and 53.3 mpg.

The single diesel engine will have an output of 190 bhp, while boasting low emissions (103-112 g/km) and returning between 61.4 and 72.4 mpg.

Mild-hybrid technology will be included with all diesel engines and the flagship M440i. The system recruits a 48V motor that helps lower emissions in slow-moving traffic while simultaneously assisting with acceleration.
