New BMW M3 Competition Features

In 1986 a performance icon was born; the BMW M3. Initially developed to comply with homologation regulations in motorsport, the M3 was a bona fide racing car for the road.

Based on the BMW 3 Series - the M3 took the already superb driving experience and gave it the full motorsport treatment, increasing dynamic capability, boosting horsepower and giving it trademark boxy arches.

M3 has cemented its place in history as one of the most renowned performance models ever, and is one of the most famous emblems to ever grace a car's rear-end. And now, over 30 years since the original, BMW welcomes its 6th generation of the M3. Bolder and more powerful than ever before, discover the latest instalment of this performance legend below.

Engines and Performance

BMW M3 Competition Engine

At the heart of every M3 is a charismatic engine, finely tuned to deliver unprecedented levels of power and performance. In this latest-generation G80 BMW M3 Competition lies a racing-inspired BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder petrol engine, which produces a colossal 503bhp.

This brand-new M3 follows tradition perfectly by deploying all of its power via its rear-wheels for a supremely exciting and engaging driving experience. What's more, this latest incarnation of the M3 can whisk its driver and passengers from 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds.

The M3's immense power is sent to the rear wheels via a state-of-the-art eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, for lightning-fast, impeccably smooth changes.

Chassis and Handling

BMW M3 Competition Rear

Each BMW M car is famed for its superior handling and driving experience. This all-new M3 Competition continues the trend as expected, with a number of measures put in place to keep the M3 glued to the road, giving the driver complete confidence in unlocking all of the car's potential.

M Adaptive suspension enables high levels of driving confidence, ensuring maximum tyre contact with the road surface, enhancing traction where possible to deploy power easily and in more effective doses.

Perhaps the M3's greatest addition is the choice of driven wheels. Available from launch with classic BMW M rear-wheel drive, handling and grip levels are further enhanced, as an all-wheel drive xDrive version of the M3 Competition is also available.

Technology and Drive Modes

BMW M3 Competition Track

M stands for motorsport, and the M3 has so many settings and modes that keen drivers will be able to custom and toggle between, to engineer their M3 to a driving experience perfect for them. Road, Sport and Track modes represent the day to day, sportier and track settings, along with configurable M1 and M2 modes.

Three damper settings are available in the electronically controlled Adaptive M suspension talked previously, along with two brake pedal feel configurations, two steering settings, and ten stages of traction control.

M Traction Control allows for controlled drifts - where legal (race tracks) with drivers able to configure the mode to suit their preferred preference.
