Are you eligable?

To lease a car from Motability, you must be receiving either:
Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC) of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) - currently £51.40 per week - or,
War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS) - currently £57.40 per week.
If you choose to lease a car through Motability's Contract Hire scheme you must have at least 12 months' award length remaining.

Who can drive your car?

Nominated drivers

If you receive the allowance but do not wish or are unable to drive, you can nominate up to two drivers. These may be friends or relatives, and parents or carers can apply on behalf of a child aged three years or older.

As of 1 January 2012:

  • All nominated drivers should live with, or within five miles of the disabled customer's address. If your disability-related needs can only be met by having drivers outside of this range, please call the Motability Customer Services team on 0845 456 4566
  • You'll also need to confirm that all proposed drivers agree to abide by the rules surrounding the use of your Motability car, sign the necessary Statement of Responsibilities and have given their consent for Motability to check their details against the DVLA driver licence database. In order to do this your proposed drivers can come to the dealership when you place your order. Alternatively, they can complete a Driver Consent Form  which you will need to take with you when you place your order.
  • Proposed drivers must not have any serious driving convictions, disqualifications, or endorsements within the last five years. There are also some restrictions on young drivers.

Young drivers

As of 1 January 2012:

  • Only one named driver can be under the age of 21- this could be the disabled customer or another driver who lives at the disabled customer's address
  • Drivers under the age of 25 can only drive cars in the lower ABI insurance groups of one to 16 and with a brake horsepower rating of 115BHP or less.
  • If you have an existing driver on your lease who is affected by these changes, they can continue to drive until you reach the end of your current agreement as long as they remain named as a permitted driver on your Certificate of Motor Insurance.

Use of your car

Motability is a Scheme designed for the benefit of disabled customers. So, as well as all the benefits on offer as part of our worry-free package, you'll need to make sure you're happy to lease a car within the Scheme guidelines.

You will be asked to make sure:

  • The car is used by, or for the benefit of, the disabled person. This does not mean that the disabled person needs to be in the car for every journey. In practice, this means other named drivers in the household can use the car for shopping and other routine activities, as long as the disabled customer will benefit.
  • Only named drivers listed on your Certificate of Motor Insurance can drive the car
  • That you let Motability know about any changes that may affect your lease
  • The car is not used as a taxi or delivery vehicle or for any unauthorised business use
  • The car is not lent, sub-leased or sold.

At the time of ordering your new car, you, your nominated drivers and the Stratstone dealer will need to sign a Statement of Responsibilities to confirm you understand and agree to abide by these guidelines surrounding the use of your car.

With Stratstone you have the option of trading in your existing privately-owned car. This means you can to use the value of your car against any possible advance payment on your new Motability car, or you can use the money to spend however you wish.

Adaptations are devices that can be fitted to your vehicle so that driving is safer and more comfortable, and getting in and out of the car is made easier. There are a number of adaptations available, many for no extra cost, that could improve your motoring experience, including adaptations to help with:

  • Seating and access
