BMW is expanding its new portfolio of armoured vehicles with the introduction of a new version of its X5 Protection VR6.
The model joins the recently announced Protection versions of the latest 7 Series saloon and the electric i7.
Powered by an updated 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology developing 523bhp, the latest X5 Protection has a 0 to 62mph acceleration time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed governed to 130mph.
Fuel economy is a claimed 21.1mpg with emissions of 305g/km,
With a full range of armoured protection available, it meets current certification for ballistic and blast resistance.
A new design of the exterior and interior ensures there is barely any perceptible difference between the BMW X5 Protection VR6 and the equivalent standard model.
BMW says its inconspicuous appearance on public roads represents an additional safety factor for individuals requiring special protection.
The upgraded powertrain of the X5 Protection VR6 teams up with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and bespoke chassis technology to deliver optimal performance in potentially dangerous situations.
With its armoured body and safety glass all round, BMW says the interior of the vehicle becomes a protective cell with additional underbody protection and a self-sealing fuel tank with a special casing that seals itself after being hit by a bullet to prevent any loss of fuel.
The X5 Protection has a 4-seat layout and has its world premiere at the Munich motor show before its general release later in 2023.
