Introducing the Audi A1
A fine evolution of the popular compact Audi hatchback. This second generation version of the A1 looks to build upon the success of its predecessor and raises the bar yet again.
Now even more sophisticated than before, showcasing enhanced refinement, sleeker and sharper styling and an all-new digital interior presentation, help ensure this second generation A1 feels every bit as premium as you would expect from an Audi.
It is quite simply a fine entry-point into the Audi range.
Design and Practicality
As compact hatchbacks go, the Audi A1 is one of the most stylish and sleek available.
Coming with five doors as standard, the compact A1 is plenty practical enough as a small hatchback, that can even worry cars in the class above. That is because the A1 feels typically Audi in its delivery, with premium feeling materials and a classy execution of intent.
The front end design ensures you know this is part of the Audi range, with its distinct single frame grille, complemented by three slits above that give the A1 enhanced presence and flair.
LED lights come as standard, front and rear on the Audi A1, along with dynamic rear indicators too, which give a sophisticated flushing motion further showcasing the A1's premium character.
Technology and Safety
A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, complemented by a central 10.1-inch multi-media interface touchscreen both come as standard in this second generation of the Audi A1.
With a high digital aura, the A1 offers cutting-edge safety in a number of ways too. Features in the range include a number of driver assistance technologies which include lane departure warning, hill-hold assist and Audi pre-sense - which is a system which that uses cameras and radar, and gives preventative actions to help avoid accidents.
An optional SONUS audio system further enhances the already excellent sound quality, whilst features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available with the Audi A1.
Engines and Performance
There are a good deal of petrol engine choices when looking at an Audi A1, which use either a 6-speed Manual and 7 speed automatic transmission.
The range kicks off with a 1.0-litre, developing 94bhp, good for 0 to 62mph in circa 11 seconds, and up to 50mpg economy. A slightly more powerful 1-0-litre joins in proceedings, offering 109bhp, allowing for 0 to 62mph in circa 10.5 seconds, whilst offering up to 52mpg. The most powerful is a 1.5-litre unit, with 147bhp, dropping the 0 to 62mph time to circa 7.8 seconds, whilst offering up to 47mpg economy.
Overall, the compact proportions mean the A1 feels decent in any guise when it comes to performance. It can happily sit at motorway speeds, and feel peppy enough thanks to its compact yet impressive turbo engine. The result is fine economy too, of up to 50mpg.
