Introducing the new Jaguar Type 01
Jaguar Type 01 introduces a reimagined vision for the marque, engineered from a blank sheet of paper. It is the brand's first production model since Jaguar set aside eight decades of familiar shapes and returned to its founding principle, Copy Nothing. To underscore the importance of this shift, Jaguar paused new car sales in the UK during the reinvention process.
Type 01 takes the form of a four-door electric grand tourer, designed, developed and built in Britain on Jaguar's dedicated Electric Architecture. The 'Type' name places it in a lineage running back many decades through the C-type, D-type, E-type and F-type, while the numbers close the story: zero for its all-electric, zero-emissions drivetrain, one for the first Jaguar of an entirely new era.
This pioneering model signals the direction the whole Jaguar range will take from here. Artistic, unapologetic and electric only.
Design and Practicality
Type 01 carries the long bonnet, sweeping roofline and fastback profile previewed by its concept, a silhouette Jaguar built specifically to feel unlike anything else on the road. At 5.2 metres, it sits closer in length to Jaguar's own XJ flagship saloon than to any SUV the brand has sold before. A glassless tailgate and panoramic, body-harmonised glazed roof lend the car a sculptural quality.
Inside, a central spine runs the full length of the cabin, creating four individual spaces rather than the usual driver-and-passenger split. It sports a brass-inspired finish along its length and across the tops of the doors, set off by artisan textiles and travertine-influenced surfaces. Travertine is the warm, veined limestone long favoured in grand architecture, and here it lends the cabin a similar sense of tactile luxury.
Built as a four-door grand tourer, Type 01 is as easy to travel in as it is difficult to ignore.
Technology and Safety
Most electric cars build their cabin around a single, oversized touchscreen at the centre of the dashboard. Type 01 takes a different approach. Behind the steering wheel, a slim digital display stretches almost to the middle of the dash, doubling as both instrument cluster and infotainment screen. Everyday controls for climate and audio are housed on a small touchscreen built into the central spine.
A ClearSight display sits at the base of the windscreen in place of the conventional rear-view mirror, showing a live camera feed of the road behind rather than a mirrored reflection. The driving position is low-set, keeping the driver closer to the car's centre of gravity. Physical controls are limited to the multifunction steering wheel and window controls; almost everything else is accessed through the screen.
This restraint extends to driver assistance too, with Type 01 drawing on safety technology already familiar from across the wider JLR family of electric vehicles.
Powertrains and Performance
Type 01 rides on Jaguar Electric Architecture, a platform built solely for battery power rather than adapted from a combustion car. A tri-motor setup, one motor at the front axle and two at the rear, produces more than 986bhp and 959lb ft of torque, making Type 01 one of the most powerful Jaguars ever built.
Building the car as electric from the outset changes the equation on weight, balance and structure. There is no petrol architecture to work around and no compromises inherited from an earlier generation, only a fresh set of engineering decisions made for the demands of a large, fast grand tourer.
Full specification, including 0 to 62mph time and top speed, will follow at Type 01's global reveal. Even ahead of that, the confirmed power and torque figures give a clear sense of the potent car Jaguar has created.
Charging
Type 01 offers a range of up to 478 miles on a single charge, with the ability to add up to 200 miles in around 15 minutes on a suitable rapid charger. These are strong figures for a car of this size and ambition. The average UK driver covers under 20 miles a day. On Type 01's 478-mile WLTP range, that works out to the better part of a month of typical driving between charges.
Plug in overnight and the battery is topped up by morning, much like leaving a phone on charge. A public rapid charger only really comes into play on longer trips, when a motorway services stop is likely already happening anyway.
