Introducing the Land Rover Discovery
Ever since its introduction at the tail end of the 1980s, the Land Discovery has made a name for itself as a hard working off-roader that does not compromise on excellent road manners.
Throughout its evolution, the Discovery has simply become a more attractive all-round package, which has reflected in its continued popularity. Having entered its latest generation, this large seven-seat SUV has been packed with ingenious features that not only enhance its ability to tackle a multitude of terrains, but boost the interior ambiance during day-to-day driving.
Not only this, but Discovery has taken a radical approach to car design, with clean modern lines complementing the sharp exterior details. Keep on reading to see what makes Discovery one of the best in its class.
Design and Practicality
There is nothing new about a large luxury SUV that offers seven seats. However, Land Rover have designed the Discovery to seat seven adults in complete comfort, which is a revelation.
Electronic air suspension comes as standard across the range, which can lower the vehicle to make it easier for passengers to get in and out, while simultaneous lowering the boot's loading lip. Speaking of which, each car comes with a power tailgate, and opens to reveal 258 litres with all seats in situ.
However, fold the rear seats down, which can be done via the conveniently placed buttons on the inside of the boot, and cargo capacity grows up to 2,406 litres. Isofix anchor points feature on the second and third row of seats, as well as the front passenger seat.
Technology and Safety
Land Rover Discovery is brimming with the latest driver assistance technologies and safety features, which explains the 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating.
Every car comes with Land Rover's signature Touch Pro infotainment system. The vibrant 10-inch touchscreen offers intuitive navigation and allows the driver to effortlessly adjust the multimedia settings, DAB radio, and vehicle set up. The standard sound system is very good, but gets upgraded further up the range courtesy of British audio specialists, Meridian.
Discovery's All-Terrain Response technology is the best on the market, and allows the driver to tailor the vehicle's settings to suit the type of terrain they are tackling. Coupled with a wading depth of up to 900 mm, Discovery can conquer just about any hurdle placed in front of it.
Other driver assistance technologies include Driver Condition Monitor, Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist and Cruise Control and Speed Limiter.
Economy and Performance
Land Rover Discovery offers two diesel engines and sole petrol unit, all of which come mated to a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. The option to select a single or twin-speed transfer box is available, which offers low and high range gear ratios for avid off-roaders.
The entry-level diesel produces 240 bhp and 317 lb/ft courtesy of its 2.0-litre engine, and offers a welcome blend of power and efficiency, with up to 33.6 mpg combined possible.
A larger 3.0-litre Twin Turbocharged V6 diesel can be chosen, which produces a substantial 306 bhp and 516 lb/ft. This engine offers more potent performance without sacrificing too heavily on fuel economy. Expect up to 31.5 mpg combined.
For those who do a lot of shorter journeys that do not warrant a diesel, the turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine is absolutely ideal. It boasts strong performance too, with 300 bhp on tap.
The available torque never goes to waste, because Discovery delivers an impressive towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg.
