Introducing the Audi A3 Sportback

Rear quarter shot of a driving Audi A3 Sportback

The Audi A3 Sportback has presented itself as a handsome and sophisticated hatchback (which Audi calls a Sportback), that has been impressively enhanced with each new generation.

Introduced in a previous generation, the Saloon version remains a popular choice for those wanting a different style, further broadening the A3's appeal.

This latest evolution of the A3 Sportback is the most polished yet, with innovative features and a variety of different versions to choose from.

Design and Practicality

Audi design has been strong for many generations, and the A3 Sportback has evolved beautifully, becoming even more sophisticated and sharp in its presentation.

From its smart honeycomb grille and sleek trapezoidal LED headlights at the front of the vehicle, flowing angles along the side of the car, to a fitting rear design, again poised with just the right amount of flair and detail, the A3 Sportback's evolution is textbook Audi.

Practicality is also excellent with a large 380-litre boot in the Sportback, increasing to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded.

Technology and Safety

Audi interiors have always had distinct air of quality about them, and the A3 Sportback is no different.

Full of premium feeling materials and features that are beautifully integrated, the A3 has a smart digital vibe with a crisp digital instrument binnacle, accompanied by a central touchscreen infotainment display which perfectly complements the aura of the cabin.

Safety has been well and truly taken care of too when it comes to the A3 Sportback, with the Sportback achieving a full five-star Euro NCAP rating.

This is thanks to advanced safety features which include:

  • Pre sense front collision warning
  • Automatic braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Cruise control
  • Road sign recognition
  • Parking assist system

Engines and Performance

There are a number of petrol and diesel engine choices when looking at an Audi A3 Sportback, via the three trim levels of Sport, S Line and Black Edition. For ease of reference, a snapshot is presented below.

It is worth noting that many A3 Sportback models can be selected with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic (S tronic) transmission.

Petrol versions consist of a 30 TFSI, which uses a 1.0-litre engine producing 109bhp, allowing for up to 50mpg economy return. There is also a larger 35 TFSI, using a 1.5-litre engine, which produces 148bhp and returns up to 49mpg. There is a diesel alternative in the form of a 35 TDI, which uses a 2.0-litre engine producing 148bhp, whilst returning up to 58mpg.

Performance wise, the '35' versions in both petrol and diesel offer 0 to 62mph in just over 8 seconds, whilst the '30' takes just over 10 seconds.

If you are after for breathtaking performance in your Audi A3 Sportback, you will want to have a look at the Audi S3 Sportback and RS3 Sportback - which are also available in Saloon versions too.
