Audi RS 6 rear shot

The Audi RS 6 is a performance estate that offers supercar levels of power as well as exceptional everyday usability.

As you can imagine, dedicated supercars have one major problem: they aren't practical. So, although the Audi R8 is an incredible driver's car, it's probably best left for weekend duty. However, the Audi RS 6 offers similar levels of performance, yet can take the kids to school and ferry your bikes to the local trail on the weekend.

Reasons to consider the Audi RS 6 include:

  • Outrageous levels of performance
  • Sumptuous interior design
  • Big boot
  • Imposing appearance
  • Did we mention it's really fast?

Engines and Driving Experience

Audi RS 6 front shot

The Audi RS 6 is only available with one petrol engine: a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 that utilises mild hybrid (MHEV) technology. Total power output stands at 590bhp and 590ft lbs, which is on par with many supercars of this generation.

In addition to the potent engine, the RS 6 distributes its power to all four wheels via Audi's iconic Quattro system, ensuring there is vast amounts of grip. As a result, the RS 6 can achieve the 0 to 62mph dash in just 3.6 seconds, and will top out at a limited 155mph (174mph in the Vorsprung model).

Despite the levels of performance, the RS 6 can return up to 22.6mpg on a combined cycle, which is pretty reasonable given the nature of the car. The engine distributes the power via a slick 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox, ensuring the power is always available.

Practicality and Running Costs

Audi RS 6 boot

The RS 6 is only available as an Avant, which is what Audi calls an estate. This isn't a bad thing, though, since it translates to a capacious cabin and luggage area.

With 565 litres at your disposal, the RS 6's boot is more than ample for anything family life can throw at it. Better yet, the rear seats will fold flat to reveal 1,680 litres of luggage capacity. ISOFIX anchor points feature as standard, so fitting a child's seat via the wide-opening rear doors is a doddle.

Unsurprisingly, the RS 6 occupies the highest insurance group (50) due to its value and performance. You should also budget more for consumables, such as tyres and brakes, since they will cost more than a regular everyday car.

Servicing and maintenance can be completed at your nearest Stratstone Audi retailer.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Audi RS 6 interior

The RS 6 is beautifully finished inside, as you'd expect from an Audi of this nature. The brand's Virtual Cockpit (digital instrument cluster) occupies the driver's line of sight, while twin touchscreens have been fitted within the centre console.

Sinking back into the RS Sports Seats, which are finished in Valcona leather with RS lettering, allows you to fully enjoy the whisper-quiet cabin at motorway speeds. Seat ventilation is fitted as standard, and 4-way electric lumbar support features for optimal comfort.

HD Matrix LED headlights provide clear vision when driving in the darkness. In addition, the rear of the vehicle benefits from LED lamps, which utilise a dynamic turn signal that's specific to RS models.

Driver aids and safety features fitted as standard include:

  • Lane departure warning
  • Rear view camera
  • Cruise control with speed limiter
  • Keyless go
  • Camera based road sign recognition

Is the Audi RS 6 right for me?

The Audi RS 6 sits in a niche part of the market because of its unique blend of performance and practicality. However, if you want supercar levels of performance alongside everyday versatility, then the RS 6 is one of the few cars that can provide this.

Being a niche market, there isn't much competition, as you can imagine. However, there are a couple of cars to consider. The Porsche Panamera is the most natural rival, and will offer similar levels of power and handling prowess. If you want something that's even more fun, then have a look at the Mercedes-AMG E-Class.
