The S3 features a 2.0-litre turbo, 4-cylinder petrol engine producing 329bhp, via an S-tronic 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, complete with Quattro all-wheel drive. This ensures 0 to 62mph is dispatched in 4.7 seconds.

Being a fast Audi, the S3 effortlessly turns the wick up significantly over a standard A3, yet still offers typical Audi quality and refinement in the situations you want.

Therefore, using the 'Drive Select' function you can pop the S3 into 'Dynamic' which sharpens up the characteristics, whilst 'Comfort' basically means if you are on a motorway trip, the car will calm down and be like a regular A3. Ideal if you want a car to be punchy one minute, and docile the next.

Practicality and Running Costs

Based on the regular Audi A3 means that a used Audi S3, in either Sportback or Saloon, is still beautifully practical.

The Sportback features a 380-litre boot, which grows to 1,200 litres if you fold the rear seats. The Saloon boot is 325 litres, which is still decent considering its sleeker saloon profile.

To run, the S3 pair will require more specialist services being performance cars, whilst tyres are low profile and will also cost more than a standard Audi A3.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Interior quality in Audi models since their introduction of the Audi Virtual Cockpit is nothing short of excellent, with the digital vibe giving the interior vibe a perfect blend of classic, meets future, meets refinement. Therefore, the instrument cluster is still in a cove, which just feels perfectly finished to some other manufacturers who use a more naked approach, resembling an iPad like display on the dash instead.

S3 models therefore feel more mature, and the technology and safety offered as part of the package is also impressive. That is because they feature Matrix LED headlights and LED rear lights, which also feature dynamic indicators and customisable daytime running light signatures, too.

Adaptive Cruise Control, head-up display and a reversing camera are also standard, enhancing the safety aspect of the S3.

Is the Audi S3 right for me?

The Audi S3 is a fine hot hatchback, or hot saloon. Think of it as a more punchy VW Golf R, whilst there is no Golf saloon, the Saloon version of the S3 has a touch more sophistication to proceedings.

Both are fine cars, and if you want a more dynamic feel, a used BMW M135i may be better suited, or if you want more interior strikingness, then a used Mercedes-AMG A 35 could be more your thing.
