Orange Audi TT rear

The Audi TT is a stylish sports car that's available as a traditional Coupé or as a Roadster (also known as a convertible).

Audi hit the ground running when they released the original TT at the end of the 1990s. The concept car looks instantly became a hit, and have continued on in the generations that followed.

The stunning appearance isn't the only reason to consider the TT, as we've highlighted below:

  • Elegant interior design
  • Great choice of engines
  • Refined driving experience
  • Decent boot size
  • Affordable running costs

Engines and Driving Experience

Orange Audi TT front

Audi aren't typically renowned for their driving engagement, you'll want a BMW for that. However, the TT is good fun to drive, and offers exceptional levels of grip when fitted with the brand's Quattro all-wheel drive system. The best bit is that it doubles up as a comfortable long distance cruiser, too.

The latest versions of the TT aren't available with diesel engines, but older models with the 2.0-litre TDI unit are sought after because of their excellent fuel economy (up to 60mpg).

Petrol

  • 40 TFSI: 2.0-litre producing 195bhp (0 to 62mph in 6.6 seconds and up to 40.9mpg)
  • 45 TFSI: 2.0-litre producing 242bhp (0 to 62mph in 5.8 seconds and up to 39.8mpg)

If you want more pace, then you'll need to look at the TTS model, which produces a healthy 302bhp and only needs 4.5 seconds to do 0 to 62mph.

Practicality and Running Costs

Orange Audi TT, boot

Buying a TT for practicality is kind of like buying boots for running; they'll do the job, but there are better options out there.

For example, the TT Coupé does have rear seats, but they are best reserved for occasional use as opposed to taking the kids to school on a regular basis. At least there are ISOFIX anchor points in the back should you need to fit a child's seat. If you need a more practical coupé, then we'd recommend the BMW 2 Series.

However, the TT does have a reasonably big boot, which is rated at 305 litres. TT Roadsters sacrifice a bit of boot space to make way for the folding roof (280 litres), plus they only have two seats.

The Audi TT occupies insurance groups 35 and above (out of 50), so this will reflect in your annual premiums. Scheduled servicing and annual MOTs can be completed through your nearest Stratstone Audi retailer.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Orange Audi TT interior

The TT has an elegant interior design that is complemented by a raft of quality materials that are soft to the touch. All models get the brand's Virtual Cockpit, which is a digital instrument cluster that also acts as the TT's infotainment system.

Generously equipped throughout the range, all models come with leather seats, climate control and smartphone connection apps that include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Sport and S line examples are popular choices, with the former getting 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights and xenon headlights. S line cars look more aggressive thanks to their sportier suspension, larger wheels and enhanced exterior appearance.

Perched at the top of the range is the Vorsprung, which benefits from a Bang & Olufsen sound system, 20-inch alloy wheels and Matrix LED headlights.

The Audi is a safe car to drive thanks to the following aids and features:

  • Rear parking aid
  • Hill hold assist
  • Cruise control with speed limiter
  • Camera and/or distance sensor
  • Audi drive select (selectable driving modes)

Is the Audi TT right for me?

There's plenty to like about the Audi TT as a usable everyday sports car. The interior is arguably in another league compared to rivals, while the punchy engines and sporty suspension make for an entertaining drive. Better yet, there's a convertible version that will suit those who want to enjoy some roof-down motoring.

The BMW 2 Series is easy to recommend as an alternative to the TT. It's not quite as eye-catching as the TT, but it'll offer better driving dynamics and a bigger cabin. A more affordable option is the Toyota GT86, while it's hard to ignore the Ford Mustang at the price some TT models command.
