The 1 Series is the entry-level model to one of the most iconic and well-known car manufacturers in existence - BMW. It acts as a great way to get behind the wheel of one of the brand's models, being the most compact and affordable car in their range. It makes for an attractive used car purchase.

Popular for many reasons, the hatchback bodystyle of the BMW 1 Series is both sharp and practical, and feels very much a premium overall package. Being a BMW, the driving experience as a whole is very impressive too.

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW is famous for being 'The Ultimate Driving Machine' and so as you'd expect, the 1 Series driving experience is very good. Both engaging manual and seamless automated transmissions are available and both make light work of everyday driving.

As standard, the refinement and level of detail is excellent in the 1 Series, especially when compared to its rivals. This refinement factor extends to the engines too, which range from 1.5-litre petrol and diesels, to the more punchy 2.0-litre offerings. The 1.6-litre diesel in particular is extremely economical with over 80mpg possible.

Keen drivers will opt for the impressive M135i and M140i models, which are essentially watered-down M cars with over 330bhp and a sub-5 second 0-62mph acceleration time.

Practicality and Running Costs

As the BMW 1 Series has a familiar hatchback body, it's a doddle to live with day in, day out.

There's a large boot too, offering between 360-380-litres, and as standard the 1 Series comes with the added bonus of 5-door practicality. Previous-generation models do have the option of a 3-door version as well, which suffers a tad in the practicality stakes, but is more handsome to look at. But if you care more about looks, then the 2 Series is probably more up your street.

Because this is the entry-point to the BMW range, running costs are pretty good in all honesty as most 1 Series models return great economy, even the range-topping performance models can achieve over 30mpg with ease.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

From 2019, the 1 Series received the highly updated and improved digital instruments and widescreen infotainment screens. Older models use a more traditional analogue instrument cluster. It isn't as impressive as the new digital cluster, but still looks clean, and is very easy to read.

Being a BMW, standard equipment is okay, although if you're looking for luxuries like leather and heated seats, you're going to be looking at the higher-spec M Sport models and above to get those included. Latest generation 1 Series models now come as standard with front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive in the performance versions - for added grip.

Standard safety features include Active Guard Plus – BMW’s automatic emergency braking system. This is complemented by a lane departure warning feature, cruise control and front and rear parking sensors. Automatic headlights also come as standard.

Is the BMW 1 Series right for me?

The BMW 1 Series is a fantastic entry into BMW ownership. It offers premium style and sophistication, a fine driving experience and many different attractive specifications. This means finding your ideal 1 Series is a relatively straight-forward process.

If you don't crave a premium badge, a Ford Focus will do a fine job of a family hatch well, but simply can't match the BMW for refinement and driving feel. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Audi A3 are more direct competitors, and both arguably have a more impressive interior - but the 1 Series offers a more engaging drive.

A VW Golf would be a fine compromise, but the BMW badge holds a certain kudos that will be the deciding factor for many.
