Launched in 2013, the F-TYPE features a classy silhouette that harks back to classic Jaguar sports car design. Available in either a coupé or convertible, the Jaguar F-TYPE looks glorious in either bodystyle.

Engines and Driving Experience

Dynamic petrol engines fill the F-TYPE range, including a 296bhp 2.0-litre 4-cylinder, which offers 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds. This is great for those wanting a fairly quick sports car that can return decent mpg.

For those wanting something more addictive, the older V6 F-TYPEs sound rather lovely, with a distinct V6 growl and 340bhp, dropping the 0 to 62mph time to 5.3 seconds. Later V6 models got 375bhp, which dropped the 0 to 62mph time to 4.8 seconds.

Older V8 models came with just shy of 500bhp, which saw 0 to 62mph happening in just 4.2 seconds. The V6 was replaced in 2020 with the facelifted F-TYPE, which features 444bhp and rear-wheel drive, with 0 to 62mph happening in just 4.6 seconds.

However, if you want the range-topping F-TYPE then you need the ferocious SVR, which comes with all-wheel drive and 567bhp from a 5.0-litre supercharged V8. It takes just 3.7 seconds to get from 0 to 62mph.

Jaguar F-TYPE Convertible

Practicality and Running Costs

As a 2-door coupé or convertible the F-TYPE is not going to be amazingly practical but it offers more space than you may think. You can get a manual gearbox but they are rare. If we are honest, the automatic suits the nature of the F-TYPE and it shows with most used examples featuring this transmission for easier day-to-day practicality.

A 407-litre boot in the coupé is impressive, but it is not the easiest to load up. The convertible version offers just 207 litres due to the roof borrowing space when retracted. Either way, when you are in the market for a car like the Jaguar F-TYPE, we do not think boot space will be high on your list of priorities.

As for running costs, you will see around 30mpg with the later models, whilst V6 and V8 models will be around the mid or low 20mpg region depending on driving style. If you're doing a long motorway run, mpg should increase to around the 30mpg though.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

As with any Jaguar, the interior is a smart and comfortable place to spend time with most examples coming with decent kit to keep you entertained.

Older cars feature analogue dials, which are crisp and clear and are complemented by a central infotainment screen. Later cars get a fully-digital instrument cluster, along with a smarter infotainment set up.

A leather steering wheel and cruise control are standard, as are LED lights, leather sports seats, climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

As with many high-end cars, you can find higher spec F-TYPE models with more dynamic styling and upgrades, such as the Meridian Surround system for better audio - although listening to the V6 or V8 engines will be sweet enough music for many owners.

Taking into account safety, fixed rollover hoops come standard in the convertible versions and cars come with traction control, airbags and the like across the range. Anti-lock brakes come as standard too.

Is the Jaguar F-TYPE right for me?

If you are after a text book sports car guaranteed to put a smile on your face, you cannot go far wrong with a Jaguar F-TYPE.

Often regarded as the spiritual successor to the Jaguar E-Type is enough to get many people interested, the fact that the F-TYPE is more powerful and modern is a nice balance to take on the modern world.

The F-TYPE does go up against some strong competition in the form of the Porsche Cayman which is one of the finest handling cars offered for sale, although does feel very polished compared to the Jag, which is not perfect but just because of this has a character that will delight many.
