Introducing the Range Rover Sport Electric
Fully electric for the first time, the Range Rover Sport Electric keeps the commanding stance of its petrol and plug-in hybrid siblings. A motor on each axle drives all four wheels from a battery mounted low in the floor, which places the centre of gravity 73mm beneath that of the plug-in hybrid.
The Sport has a more compact body than the Range Rover Electric and retains serious off-road capability, including the ability to tow up to 2,500kg. Ground clearance of up to 263mm and a wading depth of 900mm mean a flooded country lane is no reason to turn back, and the arrival of a battery has done nothing to dampen the Sport's appetite for a muddy field.
Key features:
- Two power outputs of 444bhp and 542bhp
- Electric range of up to 378 miles (WLTP)
- 0 to 62mph in as little as 4.5 seconds
- Rapid DC charging at up to 350kW, from 10 to 80 percent in about 22 minutes
- Up to 263mm of ground clearance
Range and Performance
Joining a busy motorway from a short slip road takes very little planning in the Sport, since an electric motor has its torque available from the first touch of the accelerator. Behind that response sit two motors, one on each axle, delivering either 444bhp or 542bhp depending on the version. The more powerful car produces 627lb ft of torque and reaches 62mph from a standstill in 4.5 seconds, with a Dynamic Launch mode for the moments that call for maximum urgency. The 444bhp version takes 5.6 seconds.
A 118.5kWh battery provides a WLTP range of up to 378 miles and an estimated real-world range of up to 333 miles. The body is 61 percent stiffer than the plug-in hybrid's, and air suspension, adaptive dampers and available all-wheel steering keep the car composed through the bends. Single Pedal Driving also lets the car come to a stop and hold on a hill without any use of the brake pedal.
Charging
Rapid charging is where the 800V electrical system makes the biggest difference. At a 350kW DC charger the battery goes from 10 to 80 percent in about 22 minutes, and a 10-minute stop adds up to 136 miles of range. On 400V chargers, split-charging technology still allows speeds of up to 250kW.
At home, a standard 7kW wallbox adds range whenever the car is parked, so plugging in overnight is an easy habit to build. Even a full charge from empty is complete within 19 hours at that rate. Where a 22kW AC supply is available, the onboard charger finishes the same job within seven hours. The Range Rover app lets owners monitor and optimise the charging schedule, and helps them find a charging station when out and about. The battery is covered by a warranty of up to eight years or 100,000 miles.
