Introducing the Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport represented a very different direction for the brand when the concept was unveiled in 2004. The Range Rover brand had always been synonymous with luxury and unparalleled off-roading capability, so introducing a sporty SUV was somewhat of a surprise.

However, when it was eventually released in 2005, the Range Rover Sport sold like hotcakes. Land Rover had perfectly blended sporting intentions with the plush materials and all-terrain prowess the brand had become widely recognised for. In short, the first generation Range Rover Sport was brilliant.

Having entered the next stage, the latest generation of Range Rover Sport has undergone a complete refresh that includes a revised appearance and updated interior. Completing the package are a host of innovative driver aids and engine technologies.

Design and Practicality

Range Rover Sport, Exterior, Front

Range Rover Sport has evolved in line with the brand's latest design language, which has turned to simplicity and noticeable talking points. The wraparound LED headlights have been designed to blend seamlessly into the contours of the body, while the broad range of elegant alloy wheel designs and body colours perfectly match the Range Rover Sport's powerful stance.

The driver and passenger will find it straight-forward getting comfortable because of the sheer amount of adjustability. It is also available with seven seats, which is always welcome for larger families.

The easily accessible Isofix anchor points and wide opening doors make it a doddle to fit a child's seat. To make life easier getting in and out, the Range Rover Sport lowers its air suspension when it is unlocked. Boot space ranges anywhere between 221 and 1,686 litres, depending on how you have the seats configured.

Technology and Safety

Range Rover Sport Interior

Range Rover Sport is generously equipped with an array of driver aids and safety technologies across the range, with highlights including the Electronic Air Suspension, All-Terrain Info Centre, and Pro Services (includes 4G Wi-Fi hotspot).

The Touch Pro Duo infotainment system is exceptional, with a vibrant display and intuitive menu layouts. The system itself offers features such as satellite navigation and seamless smartphone connectivity. It also pairs perfectly with the 12.3-inch interactive driver display, which can be navigated via the multi-function steering wheel.

Music lovers are guaranteed to enjoy the standard speaker system, although audiophiles will likely desire the crisp Meridian sound system that is available further up the range.

Driver aids and safety features include:

  • Emergency Braking
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Cruise Control and Speed Limiter
  • Front and Rear Parking Aid
  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Emergency Brake Assist

Economy and Performance

Range Rover Sport Wading

The engine range caters for a wide variety of needs and requirements, which includes two powerful diesel engines and a selection of potent petrol units. There is even a plug-in hybrid for those wanting greater efficiency and lower emissions.

The entry-level diesel engine is a 3.0-litre Twin Turbocharged V6 that offers a substantial 306 bhp and a huge amount of torque across the rev range; it can also return up to 37.2 mpg. A larger 4.4-litre V8 diesel unit is also available, producing 339 bhp and 545 lb/ft of torque.

Ranging between 300 and 575 bhp, the petrol engines are definitely not short of performance. Opt for the P400, which utilises a 3.0-litre Inline 6-cylinder that couples with mild-hybrid technology, and you get 400 bhp whilst delivering impressively low CO2 emissions.

More than just a pretty face, Range Rover Sport has no issue exploring off-road because of its innovative All-Terrain Response system. On top of this, this luxury SUV has a towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg (model dependent).
