Discover an approved used Defender through Stratstone
With such a decorated history, the Land Rover Defender is arguably the most iconic SUV ever built. This all-new model, which was first showcased in 2019 is a classy evolution of the original, which can have its roots traced back to the 1940s.
The Defender has always been a boxy British brute. This new incarnation is a perfect homage to the original, featuring a similar silhouette and multiple styling nods which are a perfect evolution of the Defender's style.
Points as to why you should consider a used Land Rover Defender include:
- Classy design which stays loyal to the original
- Incredible off-road capability
- Multiple bodystyles
- Various engine choices
- Six or seven seats
Engines and Driving Experience
The Defender is available as a 90 or a 110. The 90 is a compact 3-door, whilst the 110 is a more practical 5-door. Both models are surprisingly fun to drive considering their large SUV proportions, as well as being excellent off-road, too.
As for engine choice, it is standard Land Rover procedure, with diesel, petrol and plug-in hybrid versions, consisting of:
Diesel models: Economy circa 32mpg
- D200: 2.0-litre/3.0-litre, 197bhp, 0 to 62mph in 9.9/10.2 seconds
- D240: 2.0-litre, 237bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.7 seconds
- D250: 3.0-litre, 247bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.3 seconds
- D300: 3.0-litre, 296bhp, 0 to 62mph in 6.7 seconds
Petrol models: Economy circa 25mpg
- P300: 2.0-litre, 296bhp, 0 to 62mph in 7.4 seconds
- P400: 3.0-litre, 395bhp, 0 to 62mph in 6.1 seconds
- V8: 5.0-litre, 518bhp, 0 to 62mph in 5.4 seconds
Petrol/PHEV: Economy circa 85mpg
- P400e: 2.0-litre, 398bhp, 0 to 62mph in 5.6 seconds
Practicality and Running Costs
The 5-door Defender 110 is naturally more practical than the 3-door Defender 90. However, you can still seat six people in the 90 thanks to a unique jump seat, which is located between the front two seats. This can also be used as cup holders/arm rest when not being used for seating.
The 110 is a 5+2, five regular seats and two folding seats in the boot, which are only really suitable for children, or adults on a short journey. General boot space without the rearmost two seats is a meaty 1,075 litres, increasing to a colossal 2,300 litres with the middle seats folded too. In contrast, the 90 only manages a 397-litre boot area, or 1,563 litres with the rear seats folded.
General running costs mirror this premium SUVs nature. Therefore, insurance starts at a reasonable group 27 and climbs to 48 for the range-topping V8 (50 is the max). Tyres and maintenance will also be substantial due to the size complexity. Therefore, we would recommend specialist care from Stratstone Land Rover.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
A unique interior awaits occupants to the Defender. It manages to cleverly combine retro touches harking back to the original. This includes the use of exposed screw heads and tough looking materials, that are blended together in an uncanny style, resulting in a nostalgic, yet modern presentation.
A central 10-inch Pivo Pro infotainment screen in the centre of the dash looks great. Heated seats, cruise control and surround cameras come as standard, too.
Safety has also been given great attention, with the Defender receiving a full five-star Euro NCAP crash test score. This is thanks to features in the range including:
- Automatic emergency braking
- Traffic-sign recognition
- Blind-spot monitor
- Rear traffic monitor
- Lane keep assist
Is the Land Rover Defender right for me?
With all this is mind, this all-new take on the iconic Land Rover Defender has been crafted perfectly, dedicating the original whilst being a fine modern representation.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is perhaps the closest rival, this is due to the G-Class having been around for many generations too, again, updated for modern life. There are some more obscure rivals, but to be honest the Land Rover and Mercedes are clear cut winners if you are in the market for a retro and chunky, premium SUV with fine off-road capabilities.
