Range Rover Off-Road

Produced from 1969, the Land Rover Range Rover has engineered itself a legendary reputation, for both on-road and off-road capability.

Here we are taking a look at the fourth generation, which came along in 2012, being replaced in 2022. Over its reign, the Range Rover like many cars has been tweaked here and there, to further enhance its iconic reputation.

But what makes this SUV so good? The Range Rover offers:

  • An ultra-luxurious cabin
  • Enhanced comfort and quietness
  • Incredible off-road capabilities
  • Excellent on-road manners
  • A status symbol reputation

Engines and Driving Experience

Range Rover Rear

Despite its large size, the Range Rover is not shy when it comes to handling. It will not rival a sports car, but show the Range Rover some bends and it performs brilliantly, whilst keeping occupants supremely comfortable in the process. Overall, the Range Rover is an excellent 'wafter' and covers ground with great elegance and ease.

There are two standout engines in the range. An entry-level 3.0-litre diesel (D300) and a 5.0-litre V8 petrol (P565). The diesel will suit most, and is perfect for mile-munching and workhorse duties. With 0 to 62mph happening in 7.4 seconds, it has no trouble getting a shift on when needed. A 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol adds even more to the Range Rover's opulent package, propelling this 2.3-tonne SUV from 0 to 62mph in just 5.4 seconds.

There is also a PHEV option too, in the form of the P400e. This combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine and electric motor to provide a total power output of 398bhp, whilst being able to travel up to 31 miles in pure electric mode. It will also do 0 to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds.

Practicality and Running Costs

Land Rover Range Rover, Exterior, Front

At five metres long, you get plenty of space and practicality with a Range Rover. Taller and larger occupants will have no problem getting comfy, and there is plenty of storage on offer too. There is also five seats, or four seats in some models which give even more space to the rear passengers, along with enhanced storage space.

As for boot sizing, you get a colossal 909 litres. Direct rivals, such as the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLS can only offer 770, 650 and 470 litres respectively.

A large and luxurious SUV like the Range Rover is not going to be the cheapest vehicle to run. Insurance groups are 45 to 50 (50 is the highest), economy stems from around 33mpg for the diesels and around 19mpg for the range-topping petrol V8.

Servicing will be considerably more than a regular family car and is due every 15,000 miles. We recommend Stratstone Land Rover for any service or maintenance work.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Range Rover Interior

Interior quality of any Range Rover from this generation is excellent. It is without doubt one of the best in the SUV line-up, offering enhanced comfort and tranquility thanks to being whisper quiet on the move.

A digital instrument binnacle and clear infotainment screen are eye-catching, and switchgear is laid out well, with fewer buttons in later models for a clean and modern look. There is also heaps of technology with mood lighting, sat nav, built-in WiFi and electric seats.

As for safety, the Range Rover received a full five-star Euro NCAP crash test score, thanks to safety kit including:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Advanced traction control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Cruise control
  • Front and rear parking aid

Is the Range Rover right for me?

If you are after a luxury SUV that offers an excellent driving experience, both on and off-road, the Range Rover is the textbook answer.

Off-road the Range Rover is pretty unbeatable, but rivals such as the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne feel more dynamic and car-like on-road, and may suit keener drivers.

If you require a more sports focused Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport is definitely worth a look too.
