Introducing the McLaren 750S Spider
At McLaren, progress never stops. Though it closely resembles the 720S Spider, the new 750S Spider is more powerful, lighter and more engaging than its predecessor. The companion model to the 750S Coupé, the Spider offers the same uncompromising performance with the bonus of open-air thrills.
The McLaren 750S Spider sets a benchmark in convertible supercars. The inherent strength of the carbon fibre monocoque means no compromise in purity of response compared with the Coupé.
The fast-retracting hardtop puts the visceral rush of the elements and unfiltered howl of the sports exhaust just a touch of a button away. A triumph for McLaren’s painstaking philosophy of improving every detail.
Design and Practicality
Though visually an evolution of the 720S, some 30 percent of the 750S Spider’s components are new. Changes include a new front bumper and splitter, narrower eye socket intakes, new rear wheel-arch vents, revised rear bumper, a rear wing that is 20 percent larger and a new service compartment below the rear screen.
Inside, McLaren stays true to their principles of leaving the steering wheel unadorned with fiddly buttons or controls; there is also a new column-mounted instrument display with rockers each side for powertrain and handling modes.
You can choose between full Nappa leather or a Nappa/Alcantara combination for the lightweight carbon fibre-shelled seats. The Spider’s retractable hardtop takes just 11 seconds to open or close, and the weight gain over the Coupé is just 49kg.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
The 750S Spider features a new column-mounted instrument display flanked by rocker switches that allow you to flick between Comfort, Sport and Track Active Dynamic settings without taking hands off the wheel.
The McLaren Control Launcher (MCL), lets you return to bespoke aero, handling, powertrain and transmission settings at the push of a button, handy for track days or favourite roads. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and a Bowers and Wilkins premium audio system is on the options list.
Active safety is enhanced by the Spider’s excellent all-round visibility, reassuringly powerful brakes (ceramic discs and monobloc callipers are optional) and its immensely strong carbon fibre body structure. The rearview and surround view camera system have been upgraded for higher definition and clarity.
Engines and Performance
The new 750S Spider is an impressive evolution of its predecessor, weighing 30kg less and packing an additional 30bhp. This boost in power is thanks to increased turboboost and the inclusion of lightweight pistons.
The upgraded 4.0-litre flat-plane V8 engine now propels the Spider from 0 to 62mph in an astonishing 2.8 seconds, and it reaches 124mph in just 7.3 seconds.
Beyond these enhancements, the Spider benefits from more downforce, improved aerodynamic balance, and a shorter final drive ratio. Additionally, a new brake booster has been introduced, delivering a more responsive pedal feel. These refinements collectively make the 750S Spider a formidable and thrilling high-performance machine.
