Initially developed as a military vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class - often referred to as Mercedes G-Wagon, is one of the longest serving models in the German manufacturers history, after being offered as a civilian vehicle from 1979.

Naturally boxy and robust to cope with its initial military purpose, the civilian version has always kept its raw foundations, yet was complimented by the typical Mercedes-Benz class to mix the classic feel with modern enhancements. This new 2018 model takes the high-performance Mercedes-AMG G 63 into a whole new dimension.

The New Mercedes-AMG G 63 2018 Exterior Design

Naturally boxy, its robust character has seen the G-Class become extremely popular thanks to blending its no-nonsense military looks with Mercedes-Benz luxury and performance.

The character of combining retro looks with modern convenience is why the G-Class has become so popular. The AMG version takes the characteristics and adds in monumental AMG performance for a unique SUV experience.

Therefore, Mercedes-Benz have kept the iconic exterior, with only a few tweaks here and there. However, Mercedes-Benz have given the 2018 Mercedes-AMG G 63 a brand-new platform, ensuring the G-Class can offer enhanced levels of luxury and sophistication along with blistering AMG performance. New LED lights are complemented by tighter panel gaps and overall, the G 63 is larger, due to being 101 mm longer, 121 mm wider and 40 mm taller.

A prominent AMG radiator grille, complemented with flared arches and the signature side exhaust all blend together to let everyone know this is a product from Mercedes-AMG - along with up to 22-inch alloy wheels.

The Brand-New Mercedes-AMG G 63 Interior

Despite the enhancements over the years, the 2018 G 63 has had a complete overhaul. The material selection is of high-quality, along with the G-Class now offering more space, along with more comfort - thanks to seats which are fully electric, heated and also cooled.

The flagship Mercedes S-Class has rubbed off on this luxury SUV too. Therefore, state-of-the-art tech such as radar guided cruise control and lane keeping assist are present, along with the steering wheel - which is the same as the S-Class flagship.

Character of the G-Class' roots has been carefully kept, with the chrome switches and grab handle in front the front passenger. Classic round dials are presented in a twin 12.3-inch display set up - which gives a real sense of modernism to the cockpit, mirroring the latest cutting-edge Mercedes-Benz models elsewhere in the range.

The Mercedes-AMG G 63 Performance

The G 63 continues its magical blend of retro looks, excellent off-road ability, fine luxury and dominating performance.

The heart of this iconic SUV is a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine producing 585hp, via a 9-speed automatic transmission - with fully automatic or manual gear choice undertaken by the paddles on the steering wheel. 62mph takes just 4.5 seconds.

In true style, the G 63 is both incredibly agile on-road thanks to AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adjustable damping. This is done automatically, to give the most comfort depending on road surface. There is also a selection of five DYMAMIC SELECT on-road modes too. These include Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual.

Off-road performance is equally as impressive thanks to 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and off-road reduction gear - to cope with more demanding off-road conditions. Off-road modes include Sand, Trail and Rock.
