Introducing the all-new smart #2
Retaining the agile handling, good looks and simple convenience that made the smart fortwo so popular, the smart #2 introduces a refreshed approach to the compact car segment, combining distinctive design with innovative electric technology suited to modern-day city driving.
Originally known as the smart City-Coupé before being renamed the fortwo in 2004, this distinctive two-seater has been reimagined for a new generation.
Positioned as the most compact model in smart's all-electric range, the #2 is ideally suited to drivers seeking stylish urban mobility without compromising on comfort, technology or character.
Design and Practicality
Styled by Mercedes-Benz, the smart #2 is an ultra-compact two-seater combining sophisticated design, strong safety credentials and exceptional agility for city-centre driving and adventures beyond. Measuring just 2.75 metres long, its distinctive proportions retain the wheels-at-the-corners design that made the original smart instantly recognisable. Contemporary lighting and sculpted bodywork provide a modern interpretation of this familiar silhouette.
With its compact size, it delivers an impressively tight turning circle of just 6.95 metres kerb-to-kerb, allowing drivers to manoeuvre efficiently in confined spaces, such as busy car parks and narrow streets. Despite its modest dimensions, the cabin comfortably accommodates two occupants, with useful storage solutions.
The practical 305-litre boot is easy to load, even in confined spaces, thanks to the innovative split tailgate. The lower section can also serve as a convenient bench while helping to keep luggage securely in place.
Technology and Safety
The smart #2 combines intuitive digital technology with carefully considered interior design, creating a contemporary environment that feels welcoming and sophisticated. A central touchscreen provides access to infotainment and vehicle functions, complemented by a digital driver display. Selected versions also offer heated seats, a seven-speaker Sennheiser audio system and a glass roof.
Built on smart's purpose-developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), the smart #2 combines compact dimensions with impressive protection. Its fourth-generation Tridion Cell Evo features a three-layer steel construction and Full Cage Frame, incorporating high-strength steel for exceptional structural rigidity and over four tonnes of roof crush and rollover protection.
Seven airbags provide additional passive protection, while a comprehensive range of advanced driver assistance systems helps deliver reassurance on every journey. Available technologies include smart Pilot Assist, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go functionality and Highway Assist, supporting drivers in various everyday situations.
Range and Performance
The smart #2 makes electric motoring convenient, combining responsive performance with the agility required for modern urban environments. Its rear-mounted electric motor produces approximately 80bhp and 130Nm of torque, delivering power to the rear wheels through a smooth, automatic transmission.
A 35.8kWh battery provides an anticipated electric range of up to 180 miles under WLTP testing, making the smart #2 well suited to commuting and everyday journeys, with flexibility for longer excursions. This represents a substantial improvement over the previous smart EQ fortwo, which featured a 17.2kWh battery and an official range of approximately 84 miles.
The smart #2 also benefits from five-link independent rear suspension, designed to enhance stability and ride comfort. Combined with its compact proportions, rear-wheel drive and responsive electric power delivery, this creates an engaging yet reassuring driving experience in the city and on faster roads.
Charging
Charging the smart #2 has been designed around everyday convenience, with a choice of home, destination and public rapid charging options. Cost-effective home charging with a domestic wallbox allows you to start each day at full charge. Depending on the onboard charger, AC charging from 10 to 80 percent takes approximately three hours using an 11kW supply, or five hours with a 7.4kW supply.
When out and about, the smart #2 supports DC rapid charging at up to 65kW, replenishing the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes at a suitable public charging station. This makes it easy to incorporate charging into a coffee break or shopping trip.
Meanwhile, smart's Vehicle-to-Load technology transforms the car into a mobile power station, allowing drivers to charge compatible external devices, from laptops and smartphones to camping equipment and electric bikes.
