The Smart ForFour is a 4-seater city car that acts as a quirkier alternative to the likes of the Skoda Citigo and Toyota Aygo.
Bizarrely, petrol-powered examples of the ForFour have their engines mounted at the rear of the car; they're also rear-wheel drive. This does result in a sharp turning circle, however.
The ForFour is available with a 0.9-litre or 1.0-litre petrol engine, but can also be had with a 17.6 kWh battery that's good for 81 miles range. The petrols are reasonably nippy around town, and they return over 50mpg with ease.
A high roofline and wide-opening doors make the ForFour well-suited to families living in the city. The boot capacity of 185 litres isn't class-leading, but it makes up for this with a large opening and minimal loading lip.
Equipment levels are decent enough for this class of car, with cruise control, electric windows, daytime running lights, and remote central locking all coming as standard.
Being a city car, annual premiums should be reasonable, whilst road tax is free on electric models and pre-2017 cars
