Introducing the Audi A5 Avant

Audi A5 Avant Rear Angle in Blue

The Audi A5 name is nothing new, but in Avant format, it is. This Audi A5 Avant also replaces the Audi A4 Avant, and the Audi A5 Saloon replaces the A4 Saloon.

So, if you are thinking this new Audi A5 Avant looks very Audi A4 Avant-sized, the renaming proves your theory. That is because all Audi cars with even numbers now denote electric models, whilst odd numbers, like the Audi A5 Avant, are internal combustion models, with the exception of the Audi Q8, which keeps its V8 internal combustion engine.

Design and Practicality

The Audi A5 Avant offers even more practicality, thanks to its estate body style. That said, it is still a sleek and typically sophisticated Audi model showcasing typically handsome design details, with crisp, clean lines.

A new revised honeycomb effect grille is complemented by redesigned air vents. The A5 Avant also presents a new headlight design to ensure the overall design is as cutting-edge in design language as the rest of the striking, yet sophisticated Audi range.

Being an Avant, there is the added practicality over its Saloon sibling, with the boot offering 476 litres of space, which drops to 448 litres when selecting diesel versions, due to the extra space needed for the system. Of course, you can extend the boot space by dropping the rear seats, giving 1,424 litres of space, or 1,396 for diesel versions.

Technology and Safety

Audi A5 Avant Interior

The Audi A5 Avant offers a cutting-edge digital aura, thanks to an excellent 11.9-inch 'Virtual Cockpit', displaying all your important driving information.

This is joined by a 14.5-inch central touchscreen, complementing the widescreen digital ambiance. It is ultra-fast and is beautifully ergonomic, allowing for easy transitions between menus and settings, allowing you to get your A5 Avant exactly how you want it. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard, too.

The safety features are excellent, with features on the A5 Avant including parking assistance, a 360-degree camera, lane departure warnings, collision avoidance, and adaptive cruise control all available within the range.

Engines and Performance

Multiple engines are available with the Audi A5 Avant, which mirror the A5 Saloon. This means there is a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol with 150bhp or 204bhp is joined by a 2.0-litre TDI with 204bhp. These are joined by a plug-in hybrid 2.0-litre TFSI petrol.

The petrol models are front wheel drive, whilst there is a Quattro all-wheel drive version available in the diesel. It is worth noting that the plug-in hybrid version is also fitted with Quattro all-wheel drive.

Performance is decent, with all cars featuring a slick 7-speed automatic transmission, with 0 to 62mph taking as little as 5.9 seconds in the plug-in hybrid, 6.9 seconds in the Quatto diesel, or circa 7.7 seconds in the front-wheel drive petrol and diesel versions. The 150bhp petrol takes 9.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 62mph.
