Introducing the 2026 Audi RS 5 Avant
Audi Sport has never built a plug-in hybrid RS model before, which makes the RS 5 Avant, launching alongside the new RS 5 Saloon, a genuine turning point in the RS story.
The RS 5 Avant has always had a strong appeal to those who believe you shouldn't have to choose between a car that performs and one that fits your lifestyle. With the arrival of this all-new generation, Audi Sport has made that proposition more compelling than ever. The RS 5 Avant combines a 630bhp electrified V6 with the everyday versatility of an estate car, covering 0 to 62mph in 3.6 seconds while remaining equally capable of covering the daily commute on electric power alone.
Design and Practicality
The RS 5 Avant shares its wide-body stance with the Saloon, a bodyshell 90mm broader than the standard A5, but the Avant's longer roofline and raked tailgate give it a distinctly purposeful character of its own. Every flared arch and sculpted surface is there for a reason, housing the quattro hardware beneath while giving the car a planted, muscular presence on the road.
At the front, the three-dimensional honeycomb Singleframe grille and darkened Matrix LED headlights with their chequered flag DRL signature demand attention. At the rear, available OLED taillights with their own chequered-flag signature add further visual sophistication after dark.
Inside, RS sport seats trimmed in honeycomb-quilted Nappa leather provide strong lateral support and genuine comfort on longer journeys, with electric adjustment and massage functionality included.
The real revelation, however, is the boot. The 1,302-litre load capacity with the rear seats folded is enough for a full set of golf clubs, a weekend's worth of luggage and a pushchair, without any of it visible from the outside.
Technology and Safety
The fact that the same infotainment system manages everything from charging schedules to lap timing and drift angles is a quiet reminder that this is a car of genuine breadth. Few other vehicles ask as much of their technology.
A curved MMI Panorama display integrates an 11.9-inch Virtual Cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display in a single, elegant unit. An available 10.9-inch passenger screen and a head-up display with a motorsport-inspired shift light complete the picture. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, keeping connectivity effortless.
Intelligent driver assistance systems work quietly in the background, offering reassuring support without ever tainting the driving experience. For those who want to explore the car's performance limits more often, the optional Audi Sport Package adds ceramic brakes.
Underpinning all of this is Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system with Dynamic Torque Control, which works in tandem with the driver assistance suite to provide confidence whatever the road conditions.
Engines and Performance
A 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 developed by Audi Sport produces 503bhp, featuring water-cooled variable-geometry turbochargers and higher-pressure fuel injection. Dovetailing with a 175bhp electric motor integrated within the eight-speed automatic gearbox, the combined output is 630bhp and 608lb ft of torque, delivered to all four wheels through Audi's new quattro system.
To put that 630bhp figure into context: the original RS2 that started the fast Audi estate tradition produced 315bhp and was considered almost shockingly powerful at the time. The RS 5 Avant produces exactly twice that.
The headline performance figure of 0 to 62mph in 3.6 seconds is all the more remarkable given the Avant's 2,370kg kerb weight. The electric motor's instant torque delivery is largely responsible, transforming in-gear response and giving the car a sense of urgency that belies its size.
A top speed of 177mph is available with the optional Audi Sport Package. And for those moments when everything else can wait, the Boost button on the steering wheel releases full system power for ten seconds — a feature that sounds excessive right up until the moment you use it.
Charging
The RS 5 Avant has a 22kWh usable battery, and charging it fits naturally into the rhythm of everyday life. Using a standard 7kW home wallbox, a full charge takes approximately three hours, which is straightforward to manage overnight. With an 11kW AC Type 2 charger, found at supermarkets, car parks and leisure facilities, that drops to around 2.5 hours.
The 50-mile electric range sounds modest compared to a pure EV, but for the vast majority of UK drivers, it means the V6 never fires on the morning commute. Better still, the myAudi app allows remote scheduling and pre-conditioning, so the car is always ready when you are.
Test drive the Audi RS 5 Avant
The RS 5 Avant continues a story that began over thirty years ago with the RS2 — the car that proved a fast estate could be something truly extraordinary. That idea has never felt more relevant, or more accomplished, than it does here. To find out more or to arrange a test drive, contact your nearest Stratstone Audi retailer today.
