It may have been a controversial move, fitting a bona-fide performance car with a diesel engine, but that is exactly what Audi did with the Audi S6.

With the range-topping RS6 Avant featuring a 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, Audi could afford to offer up the S6 in a different package.

It makes sense with a torquey 3.0-litre diesel producing 349bhp. This means it is good for 0 to 62mph in 5.1 seconds, whilst also able to return circa 36mpg, whilst the predecessor returned less, at circa 30mpg.

Audi has been clever, as the A6 platform is not really for agile and dynamic driving or a track or bendy road, therefore it did not need to be a zingy petrol.

In this diesel format, it bridges the gap for those wanting pace, without the drawbacks of a V8 petrol engine. And for those wanting ultimate power, then a used RS6 will be better your thing, but this S6 is a just a fine, fast, comfortable premium car, which will devour miles with ease.
