Electric Car Grant 2025: A Great Time to Go Electric?
15th Aug 2025
Electric cars continue to be a hot topic within the car industry. With many manufacturers concentrating heavily on them due to laws and emissions targets, and the fact they are more mainstream than ever before, does this introduction of the electric car grant from the government mean it is now the perfect time to buy one?
We take a look at the 'Electric Car Grant' in more detail, and highlight its key points below.
- What is the Electric Car Grant?
- What discount can I get on a new electric car?
- What cars are available?
- What if I want a car that is not on the list?
- Should I buy a used electric car instead?
What is the Electric Car Grant?
The UK Government has proposed another grant to make electric cars more affordable for consumers, with discounts of up to £3,750 for certain models, which cost £37,000 or less.
This initiative forms part of the UK’s Plan for Change, which is designed to help consumers save money, whilst in turn, helping customers also switch to greener, zero-emission cars.
The grant will run until the 2028/2029 financial year.
What discount can I get on a new electric car?
According to the government website, you could get a maximum discount of £3,750 on 'Band 1' cars, or up to £1,500 on 'Band 2' cars. As mentioned, these are only on cars which cost £37,000 or less for the grant to come into effect.
It is worth noting that certain cars may fall under the £37,000 maximum price, but they may have slight factors which sees them not completely eligible for the grant. This is highlighted in the official government car list, as documented below.

Manufacturers know this, and state on their websites enhanced offers. There are also enhanced offers on electric cars costing more than £37,000, as manufacturers are too helping the push for more consumers to choose an electric vehicle as their next car.
