The new BMW X5 opens the next chapter for the vehicle that created the Sports Activity Vehicle segment over two decades ago and has sold more than 3 million cars worldwide. Now in its fifth generation, the X5 wears BMW's Neue Klasse design language, first seen on the smaller iX3, while retaining its imposing stance.
What sets this generation apart is choice. Alongside familiar petrol and diesel engines, buyers can select a plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive, or step across to the all-electric BMW iX5 for a fully battery-powered take on the same formula. There is even a hydrogen fuel cell version expected to follow further down the line.
The X5, in all its forms, remains the flagship of BMW's X range and suits drivers who have outgrown a compact SUV but have no intention of trading its versatility and capability for a saloon.
Design and Practicality
Clean surfaces, a sloping roofline and vertically aligned kidney grilles define the X5's look. Concealed BMW Winglet door handles sit flush within the bodywork, so that, at speed, the side profile stays uncluttered.
The double-X lights combine low beams, daytime running lights, sidelights and indicators into a single lens, a first for any BMW headlight design.
Inside, an accent strip beneath the instrument panel wraps from door to door, and decorative surfaces stretch to slate and glass on higher specifications, chosen for their tactile quality as much as their appearance.
A longer wheelbase brings generous rear knee room, while the standard panoramic glass roof, split into two sections, opens up the cabin considerably — useful for a car expected to cover both the school run and longer family trips.
Technology and Safety
At the centre of the dashboard sits BMW Panoramic iDrive, built around the new BMW Operating System X.
A 17.9-inch free-cut Central Display handles most functions, while BMW Panoramic Vision projects key information across the base of the windscreen, keeping the driver's eyes more closely fixed on the road. An optional passenger screen brings entertainment to the front seat, dimming automatically should the driver's attention wander.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant responds to natural speech via the "Hey BMW" prompt, drawing on Amazon's Alexa+ technology for more conversational replies.
Owners can teach the assistant a routine, such as pairing maximum air conditioning with seat ventilation once cabin temperature passes 27°C, so it happens automatically.
Driving Assistant Plus comes as standard, covering distance control and lane centring, with hands-free technology available for motorways where regulations permit.
Engines and Performance
The range opens with the X5 40 xDrive, powered by BMW's 3.0-litre inline-six with 48V mild hybrid assistance, producing 394bhp and 428 lb ft of torque for a 0 to 62mph time a little over five seconds. The turbocharged straight-six uses the Miller combustion cycle. This shortens intake valve timing to draw extra efficiency from an engine family BMW has refined for years.
Buyers who want an electric-only option for shorter trips can choose the X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid, pairing the same six-cylinder engine with an electric motor for a combined 483bhp and 516 lb ft, enough for 0 to 62mph in around 4.8 seconds. Up to 44 miles of electric-only range should cover most commutes before the engine ever needs to step in.
For a fully electric X5, the related BMW iX5 shares the same underpinnings but takes an entirely different approach to power.
Charging
The X5 50e xDrive's battery is best treated as an overnight job. Plug in via a home wallbox, and it should be ready by morning, leaving the combustion engine to handle longer trips or a depleted battery.
Public charging works as a useful top-up on the move, though the plug-in hybrid's smaller battery means it plays a supporting rather than a starring role.
Through the My BMW App, owners can set charging windows and precondition the cabin remotely, so the X5 is warm and ready before anyone steps out into a cold morning.
