BMW ix3

The iX3 was the first electric SUV to be offered by BMW, first appearing in 2020. It has since been joined by the iX1, iX2 and iX flagship.

As the first electric SUV to be born into the range, does the iX3 make a good used buy, or should you perhaps check out its siblings?

On the face of it, the iX3 is a great size, sitting above the smaller iX1 and iX2 and is arguably better looking than that of the flagship iX, along with being more affordable. Other pros include:

  • Premium looks
  • Does not stand out like some EVs
  • Handsome overall design
  • Decent practicality
  • Typical BMW refinement

Engines and Driving Experience

BMW ix3

The BMW iX3 produces 282bhp from its rear-mounted electric motor and battery combination - as it is fully electric. Alternatively, you could go for the regular BMW X3 if you are more of a fan of internal combustion.

Being the first all-electric BMW SUV means other electric BMW SUVs are more cutting-edge, but as a first effort, the iX3 still feels like a quality, modern SUV.

0 to 62mph takes 6.8 seconds, with its sibling iX1 doing it a second quicker, but like its smaller sibling, the iX3 feels much quicker off the line due to 400Nm of torque. It is laugh-out-loud fun in terms of acceleration.

Elsewhere, as the iX3 keeps the classic BMW rear-wheel drive set-up, meaning that despite its electric nature, it is still a fantastic driving SUV.

Practicality and Running Costs

BMW ix3

Practicality of the iX3 is very good, as it mimics the regular X3, which is now around the same size as older generation BMW X5 SUVs.

Therefore, there is plenty of interior space and a capacious 510-litre boot, reduced from 550 litres in the regular BMW X3 and 450 litres in the PHEV version.

The smaller iX1 offers 490 litres, so it is actually hard to warrant just an extra 20 litres in the larger iX3, but do not forget the iX3 is older.

Running costs are reasonable, and being electric should be a little more affordable than the regular combustion engined BMW X3. We recommend an official retailer like Stratstone BMW for expert servicing of your used BMW iX3.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

BMW ix3

Unlike newer BMW SUV models, the iX3 interior uses a conventional BMW dashboard layout with a separate instrument cluster in a classic cove, whilst the infotainment screen sits in the middle of the dashboard - the newer iX1 integrates them both as a sort of widescreen set-up.

Therefore, the iX3 seems a little bit more old school, although the dials are digital, unlike some older BMW models that appear digital, but are actually analogue; just use a clever backlight to mimic a digital vibe.

Either way, the iX3 still feels like a quality place to spend time, and still feels modern.

Standard safety technology include features like cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and BMW Parking Assistant. There are also a fair few other driving aids which make the ownership experience more pleasant, and driving experience easier.

Is the BMW iX3 right for me?

The BMW iX3 looks almost identical to the regular BMW X3. With the X3 being a handsome car, it certainly no bad thing, and the BMW iX1 followed suit, by looking like its X1 sibling.

To get a more statement making BMW SUV, you would have to go for the electric only iX, which could be too striking for some.

To say the BMW iX3 was the first BMW electric SUV, it is a stellar effort. The more modern and smaller iX1 offers almost the same sized boot, but interior space is less - although it is quicker from 0 to 62mph.

Either way, if you want a medium-sized SUV that drives well, and offers decent comfort and typical BMW quality, then the iX3 is definitely worth a look.
