Land Rover Discovery

Another icon in the Land Rover model line-up. The Discovery, or 'Disco' as it is often nicknamed, is a large premium SUV that offers 7-seat practicality.

Being a Land Rover, it is also superb off-road and offers fine levels of comfort on-road, too. First seen in 1989, the Discovery has enjoyed a successful history and it is the third generation which came along in 2017 in which we will be focusing on here.

Some points on why you should you consider the third generation Discovery:

  • Ultra-practical
  • Comfortable
  • Excellent off-road
  • Seven seats

Engines and Driving Experience

Land Rover Discovery Rear

Land Rover has ensured the Discovery takes after the plusher Range Rover, by being incredibly refined and quiet when in motion. The Discovery is also enjoyable to drive, and whilst its tall SUV profile is not going to rival a hot hatch when pushed, it goes above and beyond in its capabilities to offer an all-round polished driving experience.

Engine choice comes in following selection of updated petrol and diesel variants:

Petrol:

  • 2.0-litre P300: 296bhp, 0 to 62mph in 7.3 seconds, circa 25mpg
  • 3.0-litre P360 MHEV: 356bhp, 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds, circa 25mpg

Diesel:

  • 3.0-litre D250: 246bhp, 0 to 62mph in 8.1 seconds, circa 33mpg
  • 3.0-litre D300: 297bhp, 0 to 62mph in 6.8 seconds, circa 33mpg

Practicality and Running Costs

Land Rover Discovery Boot

A genuine 7-seat SUV, the Discovery offers plenty of practicality. Most 7-seater vehicles rear most seats are usually just suitable for children, yet adults will be surprised with just how much space they have in the 'Disco'.

As for boot size, when all seats are in use, the space is compromised with only 288 litres, which is a tad larger than a Volkswagen up! city car. However, if just five seats are in use you have a much more impressive 1,137 litres of boot space, rising to a massive van-like 2,406 litres with all the rear seats folded.

As for running costs, you will see around 33mpg for the diesel models, and circa 25mpg in the petrol versions. Of course, these can be improved or decreased depending how heavy your right foot is. Insurance groupings sit between 33 and 44 (out of 50) and servicing reflects the size of the Discovery, so having an increased budget set aside is sensible. We would recommend Stratstone Land Rover for specialist care.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

Land Rover Discovery Interior

The interior of any Discovery is very well presented with fine use of materials and eye-catching design. Later models now come with a fully-digital instrument cluster, whilst some older models do have a more traditional analogue set-up.

Higher-spec models like any vehicle have more desirable options, but later entry-level models still offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and 11.4-inch central touch screen and cruise control as standard. HSE models are the range-toppers, and get enhanced luxuries such as rear-heated seats, front heated and cooled seats and an impressive premium sound system.

Safety is also excellent, with the Land Rover Discovery securing a full five-star Euro NCAP crash test score. This is due to features in the range including:

  • Multiple airbags - including curtain airbags
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Tiredness detection

Is the Land Rover Discovery right for me?

If you are in the market for a 7-seat SUV that is one of the best out there, then you cannot ignore the ultra-practical Land Rover Discovery.

But there are some great rivals to consider too, in the form of the excellent BMW X5 and Audi Q7 which are again both available with seven seats. The Beemer will be more dynamic and driver-focused than the Disco, as will the Audi, but the Land Rover has them beaten off-road. The German alternatives do however feature more stylish executive interiors.

The Volvo XC90 is also worth looking at, due to its 7-seater nature and by being a subtle yet classy alternative to the Discovery, X5, and Q7.
