Design and Practicality
A true Gran Coupé, the BMW i4 is a practical 4-door with the sloping sleekness of a stylish coupé, yet all the practicality you would expect from a saloon. With signature blue detailing appearing on the bold new-look kidney grille, along the bottom of the sill and on the rear valance, this i4 is unmistakably BMW.
The i4 can seat five occupants in typical BMW refinement and comfort. A long wheelbase with short overhangs means the i4 blends practicality and optimum chassis dynamics in perfect fashion.
The boot is large, deep and has a flat floor, and the 470-litre capacity places it directly in between the loadspace found on the 3 Series and 5 Series saloons. This extends to 1,290 litres when the rear seats are folded down.
Technology and Safety
Technology is class-leading. BMW's next-generation Operating System 8 takes digital driver and vehicle interaction to a whole new level, with the latest display, control and software systems standard across the range. A curved screen for better readability is one example of the magnificent attention to detail that is obvious throughout the cabin.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which is able to automate actions based on a number of factors including GPS location, is just one of the unique features on the i4. Another is BMW ID, a digital service that allows you to import personalised vehicle settings each time you get in the car.
There are around 40 different driver assistance functions on the i4, meaning you can choose to take control when the mood suits or let the car do the work for you.
Range and Performance
The BMW i4 has a maximum range of up to 365 miles (WLTP) in standard form. Move up to the i4 M50 and that figure reduces to 318 miles (WLTP), though performance increases dramatically.
There are two powertrain options to choose from:
- i4 eDrive40: 335bhp and 317 lb ft; 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds; 365-mile range
- i4 M50: 537bhp and 586 lb ft; 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds; 318-mile range
The eDrive40 model is tuned for characterful sporty driving, with instantaneous torque and classical rear-wheel drive combining to great effect.
i4 M50 models have two motors, one driving the front wheels and one driving the rears. The fully variable system is able to automatically send the power to where it is required at any given moment, meaning you have all-wheel drive traction when you need it, and rear-wheel drive efficiency when you do not.
Charging
Because the i4 is fitted with BMW's latest Combined Charging Unit (CCU), it gives you the flexibility to use different types of public charging stations. The i4 can also be charged at home or the workplace using a Wallbox or even a conventional domestic plug socket.
Charging times vary depending on the charger that you use:
- 0 to 100 percent using a home Wallbox takes 13 hours
- 10 to 80 percent using an AC charging station takes just 31 minutes
- Adding 62 miles of range takes seven hours from a standard household socket, or two hours from a Wallbox
Range is extended by the adaptive energy recuperation that occurs during overrun and braking. A lot of electric cars use regenerative braking, but only the i4 uses technology that is connected to the navigation and driver assistance systems, adjusting the recuperation intensity in real time based on the driving scenario.
