Front Shot of Grey BMW i5 Driving

Having been around since 1972, the BMW 5 Series has built a solid foundation, that has seen it become one of the textbook answers for anyone looking to buy an executive saloon that ticks all the important boxes.

With the introduction of the eight generation 5 Series in late 2023 came the very first BMW i5 - essentially an all-electric version of the BMW 5 Series. Does it add even more luxury, being electric, with its near silent character? You could definitely argue it does.

With that, a used BMW i5 on the face of it has a lot of things going for it, which are listed below:

  • Typical 5 Series luxury
  • Electric adds to the experience
  • Typically impressive BMW build quality
  • Incredible refinement
  • Multiple versions available

Engines and Driving Experience

The i5 joined the BMW electric car range, sitting alongside its internal combustion sibling 5 Series. If you are a fan of electric, the i5 is for you, whilst if you prefer internal combustion, then you would be better off opting for a regular 5 Series.

When buying used, you will see 'eDrive 40' or 'M60'. Both use an 81.2kWh battery, but the eDrive 40 uses a single electric motor - and classic BMW rear-wheel drive, whilst the M60 uses two electric motors, and offers all-wheel drive. The eDrive 40 comes in either Sport Edition, M Sport or M Sport Pro trims. Then there is the M60 range topper.

The eDrive 40 versions produce 335hp, and are good for 0 to 62mph in 6.0 seconds, whilst the M60 features 562bhp, and drops the 0 to 62mph to a supercar taunting 3.8 seconds. The eDrive 40 versions will be fine for most, but if you want the most dynamic i5, then the M60 is for you when buying used.

Practicality and Running Costs

Grey BMW i5 Side

Being a model of the BMW 5 Series family, the i5 follows suit with plenty of practicality. It is a four-door saloon, after all, along with there also being a Touring (estate) version too, for even more practicality, if you prefer.

Even so, the Saloon version offers a large 490-litre boot, with the Touring increasing it to 570 litres. What is interesting is that the i5 Touring has the same 570-litre boot as the regular 5 Series, but the same cannot be said for the i5 Saloon, which has 30 litres less than the 5 Series Saloon.

Running costs will be similar, although electric i5 versions could benefit from savings depending on your charging preference. Official servicing is recommended to be completed at your preferred Stratstone BMW retailer.

Interior, Technology, and Safety

BMW i5 Interior

As you would imagine with a BMW unveiled in 2023, the interior of the i5 is a mix of digital screens and typical BMW quality material choice.

There is a 12.3-inch instrument panel, which flows into a 14.9-inch central touchscreen - housing all the features you would expect to see such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Wireless charging is joined by a Harman Kardon sound system.

There is also lots of safety technology, too, with a Driving Assistant Pack coming as standard, giving you features like automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist.

There is even the ability to remotely park the car via the My BMW app.

Is the BMW i5 right for me?

If you are in the market for a refined, cutting-edge saloon which happens to be electric, then the i5 will impress for sure. And if you like the sound of an i5, but would rather an internal combustion engine under the bonnet, then a regular 5 Series would be the ideal solution.

Rivals include a used Mercedes-Benz EQE which is arguably better looking, but is not as sharp, whilst the Porsche Taycan is by far the best looking, and provides a typically more dynamic and more impressive package - which you would expect being a Porsche.

Alternatively, a used Audi e-tron GT which is very similar to the Porsche Taycan, and is arguably prettier still.
