Introducing the Mercedes-AMG GT

Few cars carry a name with as much weight as the AMG GT. First introduced as Mercedes-AMG's own, pure-bred sports car, the GT was developed entirely in Affalterbach — the home of Mercedes-AMG's independent engineering division — rather than adapted from a mainstream Mercedes-Benz platform. It has always represented the brand at its most undiluted.

The current second-generation GT was a direct response to customer feedback on the original: buyers wanted more everyday comfort. AMG listened — and managed to make it faster at the same time. That broader ambition is reflected in the line-up: a 2+2 cabin, standard AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive and powertrains ranging from a four-cylinder mild hybrid to a V8 plug-in hybrid mean the GT range now covers more ground than ever before. For anyone in the market for a genuine grand tourer with serious performance credentials, it remains a difficult car to overlook.

Design and Practicality

Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe driving rear

The long, low bonnet, fastback roofline and muscular rear haunches are a direct reference to AMG’s motorsport heritage, and the car’s proportions are those of a pure coupé rather than a thinly disguised saloon.

Step inside and the 11.9-inch central display and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster sit at the heart of a cockpit-style interior trimmed in Nappa leather. The instrument panel is made from magnesium — a material more commonly found in aircraft construction than in car interiors — chosen specifically to keep weight at the front end of the car to a minimum.

AMG-specific performance seats provide lateral support without blunting long-distance comfort. The optional rear seats and a 182-litre boot keep the GT honest as a daily proposition, although not quite to family hatchback standards.

Technology and Safety

The AMG GT is built around Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment system, with AMG-specific displays presenting performance data such as torque, power output, g-force and lap timing, alongside standard navigation and connectivity. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard, and a Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system with up to 1,170 watts is available for those who crave concert-hall audio on the move.

Behind the performance credentials, the GT is a well-protected car. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic detection are all available, as is a head-up display that projects speed, navigation and driving mode information directly into the driver’s eyeline. PRE-SAFE® technology prepares the cabin for an imminent impact by tensioning seatbelts and adjusting seat positions in the moments before a collision.

Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus uses precise LED control to maintain full beam without dazzling oncoming traffic, providing a meaningful advantage on fast, unlit roads. The DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps go a step further, projecting warning symbols — road work icons and pedestrian alerts — directly onto the road surface ahead of the car.

Engines and Performance

The AMG GT Coupé is offered in four variants, each covering distinct ground on the performance spectrum. The GT 43 uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine with mild-hybrid assistance producing 416bhp, reaching 62mph in 4.6 seconds — a figure that would have been unthinkable from a four-cylinder engine a decade ago.

Every V8 in the GT 55 and GT 63 is assembled by a single technician from start to finish at the Affalterbach factory — a process AMG calls "One Man, One Engine." Each completed unit carries that engineer's signature plate. The GT 55 produces 469bhp and reaches 62mph in 3.9 seconds, while the GT 63, with 577bhp, reduces that figure to 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 196mph. At the pinnacle of the range, the GT 63 S E Performance pairs that same V8 with a rear-mounted electric motor to produce 816bhp combined, reaching 62mph in 2.8 seconds.

All variants use a nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission and AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. AMG Active Ride Control uses hydraulically interconnected adaptive dampers to provide the composure of a grand tourer while preserving the car's natural character.

Charging

The GT 63 S E Performance is the only variant in the line-up with charging capability. The 6.1 kWh high-performance battery — developed in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG Petronas’ Formula 1 engineers in Brixworth — is designed to deliver instantaneous torque and enhance performance rather than offer meaningful electric-only range.

In this case, the plug serves as a performance tool rather than a range extender. Topping up is straightforward — a domestic wallbox or standard household socket via the 3.7 kW on-board AC charger.
