Discover an approved used A7 through Stratstone
The Audi A7 is a large and luxurious saloon that offers a sharp appearance alongside a technologically advanced interior.
Although premium SUVs are among the most popular choices for motorists who want a luxurious family car, the A7 represents a great choice if you do not want something that big.
In essence, the A7 is the A4 and A5's big brother, but it does not quite beat the A8 for the size. Here are a few reasons to consider one as a used car buy:
- Stunning looks
- Spacious cabin and boot
- Advanced driver aids and safety technologies
- Potent range of engines
- Outstanding levels of refinement
Engines and Driving Experience
The A7 is all about offering a buttery-smooth driving experience and ensuring there is plenty of power for when you need it. The majority of models are fitted with Audi's legendary Quattro all-wheel drive system, which provides plenty of grip in all weather conditions.
Petrol / Hybrid
- 45 TFSI: 2.0-litre producing 242bhp (0 to 62mph in 6.2 seconds and up to 35.3mpg)
- 55 TFSI: 3.0-litre producing 335bhp (0 to 62mph in 5.3 seconds and up to 33.2mpg)
- 50 TFSI e plug-in hybrid: 2.0-litre producing 297bhp (0 to 62mph in 6.3 seconds and up to 235.4mpg with fully charged batteries)
- 55 TFSI e plug-in hybrid: 2.0-litre producing 364bhp (0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds and up to 201.8mpg with fully charged batteries)
Diesel
- 40 TDI: 2.0-litre producing 201bhp (0 to 62mph in 8.3 seconds and up to 50.4mpg)
- 45 TDI: 3.0-litre producing 228bhp (0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds and up to 39.8mpg)
- 50 TDI: 3.0-litre producing 282bhp (0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds and up to 39.8mpg)
It is worth noting that the plug-in hybrid models can travel up to 40 miles on battery power alone before needing a recharge.
Practicality and Running Costs
The A7 is what Audi call a 'Sportback', which means it blends the proportions of a saloon with the appearance of a coupé. Usually, this would hamper headroom, but this is not the case in the A7, which offers more than ample space for tall passengers. In addition, there is a large amount of legroom, too.
Courtesy of a hatchback bootlid, the A7 grants convenient access to the boot, making it easy to load and unload cumbersome items. There is 535 litres of luggage space available, which grows to 1,390 litres with the rear seats folded down. The boot is 15 litres bigger than the equivalent Mercedes-Benz CLS (520 litres).
Because of its power, and its cost when new, the A7 is not going to be the cheapest to insure. As such, the lowest insurance group the A7 resides in is 40 (with 50 being the highest). Servicing and general maintenance will cost more than your average family hatchback, but can be completed through your nearest Stratstone Audi dealership.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
As you would expect from a flagship model bearing the Audi badge, the A7 is beautifully designed inside, and immensely refined at any speed. It is worth seeking out cars with the optional air suspension for maximum comfort.
Entry-level Sport models are well-equipped, and come with 19-inch alloy wheels alongside Parking System Plus with a rear view camera; they also get satellite navigation.
S line cars are a popular choice because they have sportier exterior and interior styling, as well as 20-inch alloy wheels. The sport suspension pairs nicely with the Quattro system if you are a keen driver.
Perched at the top of the range is the Vorsprung, which benefits from 21-inch alloy wheels, front super sports seats, dynamic all-wheel steering and adaptive air suspension.
Safety features and driver aids available are class leading as you would expect, with the A7 boasting:
- Audi Parking Assistance Pack
- Cruise control with speed limiter
- Lane departure warning
- Pre-sense front (monitors the traffic in front of the vehicle for potential collision hazards)
Is the Audi A7 right for me?
The A7 is a relatively rare car on Britain's roads, just like most flagship models are; this might be appealing if you like something different. While the saloon-like proportions do not offer the same levels of practicality you would get from an SUV, it is still more than ample for active families.
Despite being a great car, there are a couple of rivals we would recommend having a look at. The Mercedes-Benz CLS is the closest rival, and will suit you if you are after a car with a flash interior design. If you have the budget, then it is hard to ignore the Porsche Panamera, which will offer a more engaging driving experience.
