Introducing the new BMW iX2

The BMW iX2 brings a coupé silhouette to BMW's all-electric line-up. This is the first time the X2 name has been offered as a fully electric model; earlier generations only ever came with petrol or diesel power. The iX2 sits alongside the iX1 as a sportier take on the same formula. It does not replace any existing model and shares showroom space with the traditionally-powered X2.

Two versions are available. The eDrive20 uses a single motor and front-wheel drive, and suits drivers who prioritise efficiency and range. The xDrive30 adds a second motor and all-wheel drive. The emphasis here shifts firmly to performance.

The iX2 suits drivers who want a compact SUV with a striking look, particularly those moving up from a hatchback who do not want to lose any of that everyday practicality.

Design and Practicality

BMW iX2

The BMW iX2 is based upon the BMW X2, and therefore sports the second generation of that car's dynamic silhouette, albeit with some slight styling tweaks as seen on the rest of the fully-electric models offered by BMW. The roofline is the giveaway — it drops away sharply behind the rear doors, a shape borrowed from the bigger X4. There is an optional illuminated kidney grille too, glowing white whenever the car is parked.

Inside, an aluminium hexacube-patterned door trim adds texture to the cabin, catching the light differently depending on the angle.

At just 1,560mm tall, the iX2 stands lower than most family hatchbacks. The sloping roofline costs a little headroom in the back, but there is still enough space for five adults to sit properly.

Despite the sloping roof, the boot remains a useful size at 525 litres with the rear seats in place. Folding the rear seats extends that to 1,400 litres, more than enough for a loaded weekend away. A false boot floor keeps charging cables neatly out of the way.

Technology and Safety

BMW iX2

At the centre of the dashboard sits BMW's Curved Display, a single sweeping panel that merges the driver's instrument cluster with the central infotainment screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect wirelessly.

Driving Assistant comes fitted as standard. It covers distance control and lane departure warnings, with options to add more comprehensive assistance for motorway driving.

Squeezing into tight shopping centre bays becomes far less stressful with Parking Assistant, which guides the car in with minimal input from the driver.

Safety extends to the structure itself. Reinforced door sills and a floor-mounted battery lower the centre of gravity, which contributes to stability as much as protection in the event of a collision.

Engines and Performance

BMW iX2

The BMW iX2 eDrive20 pairs a single electric motor with front-wheel drive. It produces 204bhp and 182lb ft of torque, enough for 0 to 62mph in around 8.6 seconds. Power delivery is smooth rather than urgent, well suited to daily driving where predictable acceleration matters more than outright pace.

Buyers wanting more should look to the xDrive30. This adds a second motor for all-wheel drive, with combined output of 313bhp and 365lb ft. It sprints to 62mph in 5.6 seconds, within two tenths of a second of the petrol-powered X2 M35i.

Despite the added performance, the xDrive30 retains the composed ride BMW's electric models are well known for. Weight sits low in the chassis thanks to the floor-mounted battery pack running the length of the car. This helps the iX2 corner with a flatter, more settled feel than its raised seating position might suggest.

Charging

BMW iX2

Both versions of the iX2 share a battery offering 64.8kWh of usable capacity, capable of accepting up to 130kW on a suitable DC rapid charger. Ten minutes on a fast public charger is enough to add around 75 miles back into the battery — useful for a quick top-up on a motorway break.

At home, an 11kW wallbox charges the battery fully overnight. An optional 22kW onboard charger shortens that further where a suitable three-phase supply is available.

The My BMW App lets owners schedule charging sessions around off-peak electricity rates. It can also set the cabin temperature from the comfort of home or the office, before anyone gets into the car.
