The C300 is the pick of the range. Its 258bhp reaches 0 to 62mph in 6.0 seconds, and the extra pull is easy to feel from a standstill. Throttle response sharpens further as the revs climb, especially through the mid-range. The C200 and both diesels are more restrained, with power ranging from 201bhp to 265bhp. Performance is still plentiful enough for the heavy majority.
Plug-in hybrid versions add an electric motor to either a petrol or diesel engine. The C300e produces a combined 316bhp while the C300de produces 302bhp. Together, both accelerate briskly. The electric motor fills in before the turbo responds. The shove off the line is stronger. Electric-only running is near silent, covering up to 68 miles, but if you want a completely emissions-free experience, the C-Class Electric will appeal most.
