Track days and off-road driving courses enable you to experience the full potential of modern performance and 4x4 vehicles, allowing you to reach speeds and go places you just aren't allowed to on the public road network, for obvious reasons.
In recent years, car manufacturers have seen this as an opportunity to show off their latest performance or off-road vehicles, allowing existing and potential customers the chance to really get a feel for what these high-end vehicles are truly capable of.
Here we've rounded up a list of some of the best track days and experiences put on by major manufacturers such as Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover.
Porsche Experience Centre Silverstone
With such rich heritage in Motorsport, Porsche are keener than most to provide on-track experiences for potential and existing customers, so much so that they have their own Experience Centre at the home of British Motorsport: Silverstone Circuit.
The Centre has 6 different driving tracks, which test different areas of driver skill, including a handling circuit where you can test the agility Porsche cars are famed for, as well as the Ice Hill and Kick Plate which will test your own abilities in extreme low-grip scenarios.
There are too many experiences to list, but you can experience everything from the mid-engined 718 Cayman and Boxster right up to the GT RS Experience that gets you behind the wheel of a 700 bhp 991 Gen II GT2 RS. On and off-road experiences in the Cayenne and Macan are available, too.
Mercedes-Benz World - Weybridge
There's a huge range of models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, so it's fitting that there are a total of 25 different driving experiences to choose from at Mercedes-Benz World, located in Surrey.
On the track, you can experience both Mercedes-AMG C 43 (3.0-litre V6 Biturbo) or Mercedes-AMG C 63 (4.0-litre V8 Biturbo), as well as the Mercedes-AMG GT and GT R supercars.
Off-road driving can either be experienced in the GLE or world-renowned G-Class, or you can combine both on and off-road driving into a 1 hour experience.
Winter driving courses allow you to really put your driving skills to the test, and there are both on and off-road courses for under 17s too, that aim to give youngsters their first taste of being behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz in a safe and controlled environment.
BMW Driving Experiences
BMW simply offer two driving experiences: An Introduction to Performance and Masters of Performance. They run at various dates and locations throughout the year, rather than just in one particular place.
An Introduction to Performance is just that - nailing the basics of performance driving, learning racing lines and braking points from professional driving instructors. There are four main parts of the experience: a track session with a selection of BMW M Performance models, handling activities, more track driving in a circuit-prepared BMW M car, and finally a passenger hot lap with a professional.
Designed for more experienced track drivers, the Masters of Performance course gives you access to sophisticated data analysis and professional one-to-one instruction to hone your racing skills.
Land Rover Experience Drives
Land Rovers are world-famous for their off-road ability. Steep hills, muddy paths, even rivers - Land Rover's product range can tackle them all. And now you can too!
There are 9 Experience Centres in the UK where you can get behind the wheel and take on the rough stuff, plus 20 more around the world if you fancy travelling further afield. There are taster days available, as well as half day and full day experiences.
Full Day Experiences let you navigate water, low traction surfaces, side-slopes, rock crawls, as well as inclines and descents - all under the guidance of a professional instructor, of course.
With models such as the Range Rover and Discovery in the line-up, it's a truly memorable experience. Check out the Trip Advisor ratings - they don't disappoint.
Aston Martin Stowe Experience
Aston Martin offer you the chance to experience the Stowe Circuit at Silverstone behind the wheel of a New Vantage. This is the home of the Aston Martin Vehicle Dynamics team and is where all future vehicles are developed, inside the Test & Development Centre.
As mentioned, you'll be driving the New Vantage in what's known as the "Discovery" course, which is a half day experience which includes one-to-one driver tuition on the track, and 3x 15-minute sessions of track time.
You'll also be treated to a performance hot lap with an instructor, as well as hospitality that includes lunch and refreshments.
The experience also gives you an insight into what goes on behind the scenes of the development work that takes place on each and every Aston Martin model.
Jaguar Classic Sports Car Experience
Jaguar offer one of the most unique experiences of any car manufacturer with their Classic Sports Car Experience, that allows you to drive some of Jaguar's best-loved models from a bygone era.
The two cars you'll experience are the famed Jaguar E-Type and XK150 - hugely rare and valuable cars with a rich heritage dating back to the 1950s and '60s.
Available on selected dates throughout the year, the experience days take place at Jaguar's private proving ground in Fen End, Warwickshire.
The 1.5 hour sessions include refreshments, expert driver tuition and the chance to drive the E-Type and XK150 on the track - pretty cool indeed.
Stratstone Club Track ExperienceWant to put your own car through its paces on an exclusive track day? That's where Stratstone Club comes in.
We're offering our customers the chance to test their vehicle's metal at the first Stratstone Club Track Experience at the renowned Anglesey Circuit, a breathtaking location with enough twists and turns to really test your driving ability.
Whether you're a novice on track or an experienced racer, you're welcome to join us and a team of professional racing drivers will be on-hand to offer instruction and help you perfect your driving technique, all from the comfort of your own high-performance car.
Whether you're a fan of a particular brand already, or you're looking to try something new, the good news is that car manufacturers are embracing the desire to push their products to the limits, with experiences that will last long in the memory.
