Porsche Macan
Starting off our list with Porsche, a brand famous for their luxury sports cars, rather than their SUVs. Launched in 2014, the Macan sits under the larger Cayenne in the Porsche SUV line-up. You would be forgiven in thinking that the iconic 911 sports car is the brand's best-selling model, although in 2021 it was the Macan, followed by the Cayenne, both selling double the units of the 911 worldwide.
It is easy to see why the Macan has been so successful. Not only does it tick the practicality boxes which all good SUVs must do, but it uses its heritage and Porsche DNA in the most perfect of ways, ensuring you are indeed getting a sports car, wrapped-up in an SUV package.
With 0 to 62mph happening in as low as 4.3 seconds thanks to a standard PDK automatic transmission, the Macan is a textbook Porsche offering high performance, whilst not forgetting its typical sophistication and practical foundations. If you are a keen driver, the Macan has to be on your small luxury SUV shopping list.
Search Porsche MacanRange Rover Evoque
A name synonymous with SUVs and luxury. The Range Rover Evoque is the smallest model in the line-up and sits beneath the Velar and iconic Range Rover.
The Range Rover Evoque is the entry-level SUV in the Land Rover Range Rover portfolio, and has introduced brand-new buyers to the brand. It comes as no surprise to see it at the top of sales ranks in years gone by.
This is of course thanks to the package the Evoque offers. The second-generation model is much more handsome than its predecessor, taking styling cues from its avant-garde Velar sibling. The interior has been enhanced too, increasing the luxury aspect with sound deadening helping to increase refinement, complemented by a crisp digital cockpit that provides an additional wow factor.
A massive 472-litre boot, and engines in the range allowing for 40mpg, further enhance the Evoque's appeal. And let us not forget this is a Land Rover, which means it is also excellent off-road.
Search Range Rover Evoque OffersBMW iX3
It would have been easy to follow the trend of the other two SUVs above and express how good the X1 - BMW's entry-level SUV is. But it is the iX3 we are including here as BMW have really started to get serious with their fully-electric offerings in recent times, and the iX3 is the Munich manufacturer's first completely electric SUV.
What is interesting, is that the iX3 is essentially a fully-electric version of the regular BMW X3 - which happens to be the top performer in the best-selling BMW models.
And this being 'The Ultimate Driving Machine', the iX3 does not follow its rivals. Instead, this SUV is rear-wheel drive, and is aimed at people who want an SUV for the enhanced practicality, chunkiness and style, rather than going off-road exploring.
With 285 miles available from a charge, the iX3 will suit most regular drivers, and with 0 to 62mph taking just 6.8 seconds, it is plenty quick enough considering its large SUV nature.
Search BMW iX3 OffersMercedes-Benz GLB
The big German manufacturers have a large arsenal of SUVs coming in all shapes, sizes and specifications. The compact GLB is a stylish SUV from Mercedes-Benz with a luxurious and state-of-the-art cabin that has a trick up its sleeve, that most small SUVs cannot offer.
This is because the GLB has the option of seven seats, meaning it is a superb luxury choice for those with a large family, who do not necessarily want a large SUV, as the GLB is still fairly small in comparison.
The looks are typically sophisticated, being a Mercedes-Benz. These are complemented further by the widescreen digital cockpit, ensuring driver and passengers will never get bored of the cutting-edge fit and feel. Models are plenty quick enough to keep up with modern traffic, and some models can even return close to 50mpg, which is excellent for a luxury SUV.
Search Mercedes-Benz GLB OffersMINI Countryman
The Countryman is the largest MINI you can buy, and being the brand's sole SUV, it appeals to those who like their cars quirky and fashionable, and let us not forget just how customisable any MINI is. Even the cutting-edge plug-in hybrid, the Countryman has many guises to suit the most quirky of customer.
With 0 to 62mph happening in just 5.1 seconds, the John Cooper Works edition is ideal for those who love the go-kart character of a MINI, but in a more practical, yet hugely fast and fun SUV. But if you fancy an ultra-comfortable Countryman, then the PHEV is properly impressive, with an uncanny relaxing ride offering almost zero road noise.
Inside, mood lighting, retro instruments and a sense of luxury refinement ensure the Countryman is a fine SUV if you are looking for a more affordable and fun SUV, which still ticks the luxury box, and then some.
Search MINI Countryman OffersJaguar I-PACE
Jaguar offer many great SUVs, but their fully-electric I-PACE is one serious piece of kit which showcases Jaguar's ability to blend fine luxury, with state-of-the-art electric technology.
It is no slouch either, with 396bhp on tap, the I-PACE can go from 0 to 62mph in just 4.8 seconds. A range of up to 292 miles is also good for the technology and performance on offer, and you will be saving a lot in electricity costs when compared to a petrol-powered alternative SUV.
Despite a sleeker body, there is still a large 656-litre boot, although those over six feet tall may feel the effects of the sloping roofline - but kids will have no such worries.
Interior quality is typically premium with digital screens and a high quality feel throughout. It may not be first on the list for an SUV which is ideal off-road, but for one that offers a dynamic and refined drive, and attractive running costs, it is definitely worth a look.
