Mercedes-Benz GLA vs Mercedes-Benz GLC: Which is Right for You?
27th Jun 2025
Another article about SUVs, but this time it is the Mercedes-Benz brand we are taking a look at. The entry-level GLA is pitched against the more sophisticated bigger sibling, the GLC.
Mercedes-Benz SUVs can be identified by the 'G' in their names, whilst the end letter usually indicates size. Therefore, GLA being the smallest SUV model, like the A-Class, and GLC being a mid-size model, like the C-Class.
As usual, we will compare both the GLA and GLC in the categories below.
- Introduction and Design
- Versions and Performance
- Interior and Technology
- Practicality
- Value and Final Thoughts
Introduction and Design
Interestingly, the GLA was introduced in 2013, with the GLC following in 2015. Both cars are now, at the time of writing, in their second generations.
The pair resemble the size and characteristics of their car siblings, therefore you can see a little Mercedes-Benz A-Class in the GLA and design hints of the C-Class in the GLC. This gives those looking at Mercedes-Benz SUVs an idea of sizing and where they sit in the range.
Therefore, like the C-Class, the GLC is the more sophisticated and polished SUV, whilst the GLA is more like its entry-level A-Class sibling, perhaps more suited to a younger buyer.
Versions and Performance
Naturally, both the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Mercedes-Benz GLC have multiple versions, which mirror the rest of the Mercedes-Benz range to some extent, meaning you have a choice of trims to suit all tastes and lifestyles. Of course, this means their are high performance Mercedes-AMG versions, too.
There is also an electric version of the GLA and GLC, which are the EQA and EQC, which in the EQA'a case is very similar in appearance to the GLA, whilst the EQC is a little more different. However, the GLC was discontinued in 2023, whilst the EQA can still be ordered new at the time of writing. Plug-in Hybrid version of each model are also available, if you want the best of both worlds.
Trim lines include the familiar Mercedes-Benz trims of 'Sport' and 'AMG Line' in both models, with petrol and diesel engine choice, too. And there is also a Coupé body style on the GLC model too, if preferred.
The range-toppers of course are the AMG variants. The GLC AMG is still available new, whilst the GLA-AMG is only available used. The GLA AMG uses a 2.0-litre, 421bhp turbo engine, complemented by an 8-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive, enabling 0 to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds. The bigger GLC AMG sibling uses the same engine, only with a 9-speed automatic transmission, with 0 to 62mph taking 4.5 seconds. But, there is also a Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E PERFORMANCE version, offering a monstrous 671bhp, dropping the 0 to 62mph time to just 3.5 seconds.
Interior and Technology
Mercedes-Benz interiors are very much digitally focused, with large iPad-like screens for the instrument binnacle and central infotainment screen. Therefore, both interiors come across as ultra-modern by new car standards.
The GLC mixes it up with a landscape cluster, and portrait central screen which are separate. It feels more premium this way, whilst the GLA screens are connected, which feels less premium. Of course it will all come down to personal preference, but the GLC just feels that more sophisticated, as mentioned previously, with again, the GLA feeling more for the younger buyer.
Technology is impressive as expected via the digital ambiance, with things like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard, and a whole host of safety technology including cameras, assistance driving aids and upgraded audio available in the range.
Practicality
Of course, in the practicality stakes, you would expect the GLC to offer more space due to its larger size, and you would be correct. There is more cabin space, and a larger load area, with 620 litres on offer, or 1,680 litres with the rear seats folded.
The GLA for comparison offers 485 litres for petrol models, and 487 litres for diesel models, with 1,420 or 1,430 litres with the rear seats folded. And, like most hybrid models, both the GLC and GLA boot spaces are reduced somewhat due to the electric components robbing space, as is the case with many PHEV models of similar ilk.
Value and Final Thoughts
From comparing the entry-level Mercedes-Benz GLA SUV, and the larger GLC sibling, it is rather a clear cut conclusion that the bigger GLC offers more class, sophistication, and of course, the higher performing GLC 63 AMG variant.
But does that mean the GLA is a bad car? Not at all, it is merely offers a similar Mercedes-Benz SUV experience, just in a more compact package, which as mentioned, may be suited to a younger buyer, or younger family.
Both SUVs offer plenty of choice, with different trims, engines, body styles and performance variants. And, with the digital aura of the interiors, both SUVs feel cutting-edge and ultra-modern.
