The Mercedes-Benz CLS was first introduced in 2003, running till 2023, which was when it was discontinued. In this time it enjoyed three generations.

Here we take a look at the final third generation, which ran from 2018 to 2023 and offered a pair of diesel engines in the form of the 350d and 400d, which both came with in-line six-cylinder diesel engines.

The former can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 5.7 seconds, with the latter taking 5.0 seconds. They return 48mpg and 47mpg, respectively.

There was also a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder biturbo petrol engine that takes 4.8 seconds to go from 0 to 62mph and returns up to 36mpg.

Naturally, there was a full Mercedes-AMG variant in the form of the CLS 53, which uses a hybridised powertrain (22bhp) complete with an inline-six cylinder (429bhp) to ensure a 0 to 62mph time of 4.5 seconds.

Running costs will increase as you go up the range, whilst insurance is also pricey, taking up groups 47 to 50 depending on the model (50 is the highest group).

As for practicality, the CLS offers decent amounts of space with a 520-litre boot for diesels and a 490-litre boot for petrols.
