Unveiled in 2019, the Mercedes-Benz GLB sits between the smaller GLA SUV and larger GLC SUV, but the GLB does something its two siblings cannot, by offering seven seats.

The GLB is available with petrol and diesel engines, with the petrol options all coming with electrified mild-hybrid powertrains, all of which provide excellent real-world economy and performance.

Petrol units range from 134bhp to 221bhp and return around 40mpg, whilst the diesel units produce between 114bhp and 187bhp and return around 48mpg. For those who want enhanced performance with their GLB, there is the AMG GLB 35 4MATIC with an impressive 302bhp and a 0 to 62mph time of 5.2 seconds. It will also return around 31mpg.

Running costs are reasonable for this premium, practical SUV with insurance groups falling between 24 and 32 (50 is the highest), whilst even the AMG version only takes it up to group 38. Practicality is excellent, with seven seats as standard. A 570-litre boot is accessible in five-seat mode, with space for a couple of overnight bags when seven seats are in use.
