Used MINI Hatch For Sale
The MINI Hatch is a stylish supermini that's available in either 3 or 5-door bodystyles and was introduced in 2014.
A classic design that is instantly recognisable among UK citizens is one of the reasons the MINI Hatch is so popular. However, it is the excellent build quality and fun driving experience that really impresses in the Hatchback, making it a fine daily commuter.
Here are the reasons you may want to consider a MINI Hatch:
- Immense fun to drive
- Retro styling with a modern twist
- Punchy engines
- Affordable to run
- Decent equipment levels
Engines and Driving Experience
Although describing the MINI Hatch's driving experience as "go-kart like" is an ageing cliché, it is not exactly far off the mark.
With super-direct steering, sharp brakes and a knack for staying flat through corners, the Hatch really does offer smiles in abundance. Impressively, this car will happily settle down when required, making it a good daily commuter.
The entry-level 1.5-litre petrol engine feels really punchy despite its modest power output of between 102bhp and 134bhp (model dependent). Expecting over 55mpg on a combined cycle would not be unreasonable with this engine.
Cooper S and John Cooper Works (JCW) models utilise a potent 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 192bhp and 231bhp respectively. 0 to 62mph takes well under seven seconds, making them great fun to drive.
Go for an older model and you may come across a 1.5-litre diesel engine. It is not particularly quick, but it'll reward you with over 70mpg combined as way of an apology.
Practicality and Running Costs
The MINI Hatch is not renowned for being the most practical car in the world. However, you can opt for a 5-door model if you need regular and convenient access to the rear of the car.
Fear not though, if you have a child and prefer the looks of the 3-door model, then you may be pleased to hear that the Hatch features ISOFIX anchor points in the passenger seat, as well as the rear seats.
Boot space is not massive at 211 litres, but a relatively wide opening and a low-loading lip make up for this shortfall. If boot space is a priority, but you want a fun drive, then the Ford Fiesta offers a 351-litre boot and similar driving thrills.
Running a Hatch should not set you back a great deal. The lower-powered models occupy low insurance groups and are inexpensive to maintain. However, you will need to budget more for the Cooper S and JCW models.
Servicing and maintenance can be completed at your nearest Stratstone MINI retailer.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
The MINI Hatch's interior design and quality deserves a great deal of praise. Premium materials feature throughout, while the design cues from the original cars will appeal to anyone who is a fan of the brand's heritage.
Sitting within the central dashboard is an infotainment system with a 6.5-inch screen. The intuitive and vibrant menus are easy to navigate thanks to the rotating knob on the centre console.
Equipment levels are pretty generous across the range, which consists of the Classic, Sport and Exclusive. All cars get air-conditioning, DAB digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity and LED exterior lighting as standard.
It is worth noting that later models get luxuries such as rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps as standard. However, older models only get these kinds of gadgets if they have been fitted with a Chili or Pepper pack.
The Hatch is well-loaded when it comes to safety tech, with features including:
- ISOFIX anchor points in the passenger and rear seats
- Six airbags
- Tyre-pressure monitoring system
- Stability control
- MINI Teleservices and MINI eCall (alerts the emergency services in the event of an accident)
Is the MINI Hatch right for me?
It is not hard to see why the MINI Hatch is so popular among UK motorists. If you are looking for a car that is brimming with character; that is affordable to run; and is really well-made, then you can not go wrong with one of these.
However, there is no denying that the Hatch is not the most practical thing going. If that is an issue, then the aforementioned Ford Fiesta is certainly worth considering. Then again, you may want something premium like the MINI, in which case the Volkswagen Polo does a stellar job of offering affordable running costs and excellent build quality.
