Discover an approved used A-Class through Stratstone
Available as both a hatchback and as a saloon, the A-Class is the most compact model in the Mercedes-Benz line-up of cars.
The current generation of A-Class was launched in 2018, bringing with it sharper styling and an interior unlike any other premium hatchback. Buyers were (and still are) wowed by the dazzling MBUX touchscreen and digital instrument cluster set up, and refinement was another step up from the previous generation.
Given its popularity, there are plenty of options when looking for a used A-Class in terms of specification and engine choices. Reasons to buy an A-Class include:
- Class-leading infotainment system
- Excellent comfort and refinement
- Premium image
- Advanced safety features
- Plug-in hybrid and performance versions
Engines and Driving Experience
There are three choices when it comes to petrol engines: the A 180, A 200 and the A 250. The first two are 1.33 litres in size and produce 134bhp and 163bhp respectively. They'll get you around town just fine and can achieve around 46mpg.
The latter A 250 uses a more powerful 2.0-litre engine for a total of 221bhp, resulting in much quicker acceleration but you should expect less than 40mpg.
If there's a 'd' after the model name, that means it's a diesel. A 180 d, A 200 d and A 220 d versions can all be found on the used market, offering mid-to-late 50s mpg and plenty of motorway overtaking power.
There are some used A 250 e plug-in hybrids making their way onto the used car scene too, with the ability to travel up to 44 miles on EV power alone before transferring to petrol/electric hybrid power.
Performance versions, in the form of the A 35 AMG and A 45 AMG, provide ultimate driving thrills thanks to their enormous power outputs.
Practicality and Running Costs
Mercedes has worked hard to ensure the A-Class is as practical as possible, in the knowledge that it will appeal to young couples, business professionals and families alike.
The hatchback has a 370-litre boot capacity, which is only slightly smaller than the latest generation of BMW 1 Series (380 litres) and is easily large enough for shopping trips. It can be extended to 1,200 litres by folding the rear seats down, too.
Saloon models get an additional 50 litres of space with the seats up, which comes in the form of depth rather than height due to the traditional saloon-style boot lid as opposed to a hatchback tailgate.
Running costs are kept low thanks to good fuel economy - particularly on diesel models - and the flat-rate road tax system.
Servicing and Parts can be more expensive than traditional hatchbacks like the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, but will be in line with similar models from Audi and Lexus.
Stratstone Mercedes-Benz can provide specialist care to ensure your A-Class remains in prime condition.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
Interior and technology are two areas where the Mercedes A-Class shines. It's one of the most tech-laden compact cars you can buy, with all versions getting two adjoined screens for the MBUX infotainment system and instrument cluster.
Entry-level SE and Sport models have 7-inch screens as standard, but you should seek out higher-spec versions such as the Sport Executive and AMG Line, which have larger 10.25-inch screens for the full effect.
To use, the touchscreen feels like a high-end smartphone; instantly responsive and full of features. You can also use the "Hey, Mercedes" voice control function to change the music you are listening to or input a navigation destination.
Mercedes are one of the world leaders in vehicle safety technology, and all A-Class models are equipped with:
- Active brake assist
- Active lane keeping assist
- Electric parking brake
- Tyre pressure monitoring system
Is the Mercedes-Benz A-Class right for me?
If you want a little bit of luxury in your motoring life that's still affordable and easy to drive, it's hard to beat a premium hatchback like the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It offers great interior space, efficient engines and, importantly, next-generation infotainment.
It's that very same infotainment system - along with the impressive digital instrument cluster that accompanies it - that sets the A-Class apart from competition.
The BMW 1 Series might be a little more fun to drive, while the engines in the Audi A3 are generally more refined and it's possible to seek out an all-wheel drive version, too. A Lexus CT provides a left-field hybrid option that's very dependable but perhaps not as stylish as the A-Class.
