Discover an approved used B-Class through Stratstone
This generation of Mercedes-Benz B-Class, which has been around since 2019, is a different kind of crossover - one that straddles the line between a hatchback and a people carrier. While most review websites will call it an MPV (multi-purpose vehicle), Mercedes themselves would rather it's referred to as a hatchback, because it doesn't sound as mundane.
Make no mistake however, the B-Class is a family car and a very good one at that. It manages to get all the basics right while retaining some style and elegance in the process. Reasons to bag yourself a B-Class include:
- Good cabin and boot space
- Gorgeous interior styling
- High-end look and feel
- Economical engine range
- Comfortable and refined
Engines and Driving Experience
With the B-Class, engine choice extends to not just two petrol engines and two diesels, but also a plug-in hybrid, too.
The 1.33-litre petrol comes in either B 180 or B 200 form, producing 134 and 161bhp respectively whilst achieving around 45mpg in mixed driving. Pair that very same unit with a few batteries and an electric motor and you'll have what's called a B 250 e, which is a plug-in hybrid.
The 1.5-litre diesel engine comes in B 200 d or B 220 d guise, giving similar performance figures to the petrols while providing around 10mpg extra.
On the road, it feels similar to the smaller A-Class, which is no bad thing. Clever suspension design and expert tuning has resulted in a car that manages to hide its MPV-ness very well, with a comfortable ride and decent handling.
Practicality and Running Costs
Being higher up than its smaller sibling, the B-Class offers a raised seating position that greatly reduces the amount of bending you have to do in order to access the cabin.
Another practicality bonus of its MPV-like body shape is of course the boot capacity, which is an impressive 455 litres. This is only slightly less than a BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, this car's main rival. The space itself is tall and square, making it easy to fit larger items inside. The 40:20:40 rear seats fold pretty much completely flat, giving you a 1,540-litre capacity - larger than that of a Volkswagen Golf SV(1,520 litres).
The back seats are very spacious, to the point where even adults will have enough head and legroom to get comfy.
Diesel versions will be the cheapest to run in terms of fuel economy, but the flat-rate road tax system, introduced in 2017, means you won't save any money there. Because all the engines are sourced from, or built in conjunction with, Renault, servicing isn't as expensive as you might think.
Interior, Technology, and Safety
Mercedes have invested a lot of money into creating one of the best infotainment and driver instrument cluster setups on the market, and the MBUX system fitted to the B-Class is no exception. It's a highly customisable pair of 10.25-inch screens (on all but entry-level spec) that displays all the information you could ever want, and more.
Two-zone automatic climate control is fitted across the range and the rear seat passengers even get their own climate vents. Standard kit also includes heated front seats, cruise control, Bluetooth and sat nav.
Knowing that this will be a car that appeals to families, Mercedes decided to be very generous with the safety tech. All cars come with:
- Automatic headlamp activation
- Active brake assist with autonomous braking
- Automatic child seat recognition sensor
- Speed limit assist
- Tyre pressure monitoring system
Is the Mercedes-Benz B-Class the right car for me?
When you need more space than a traditional hatchback but aren't yet ready to fully commit to life behind the wheel of a full-blown people carrier, the Mercedes B-Class gives you another option. Its classy interior and premium exterior are enough to make you feel special while you transport your family wherever you need to go.
There aren't many premium MPVs, but the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is definitely a popular one and offers more room but perhaps a touch less style. The Volkswagen Golf SV is another competent example of a hatchback-turned-MPV, and will be cheaper to buy.
