Best UK Off-Road Driving Experiences
30th Nov 2021
Off-road driving is an experience unlike anything else. It gives you the chance to push your (or someone else's) vehicle to the limit and find out whether car or driver are truly cut out for driving on all terrains. It is great fun too.
The landscape of the UK lends itself perfectly to off-road driving. After all, some of the world's best off-road vehicles have been created right here - tried and tested on our hills and in our valleys. Plus this is one outdoor pursuit that the UK weather rarely hinders - the wetter the better in many cases.
Off road driving experiences offer car and outdoor enthusiasts the chance to get out in the countryside and experience the full capability of off-road machines.
There are many sites offering experience days catering to all abilities and experience levels located across the country. To help you choose one that is not only close to you, but also suits your experience level, we have picked our favourite five off-road venues.
Deepdale Off Road 4x4 Driving Centre
Deepdale Off Road, Bowes Road, Barnard Castle, County Durham, DL12 9RB
This County Durham-based facility spans over 20 acres and is one of the most established providers of off-road driving experiences. With a range of 4x4 options, drivers can choose from two different course types - depending on the time they have available:
- Half Day Event - lasting three hours, ideal for beginners who can cover a range of terrains suited to their confidence levels
- Full Day Event - perfect for two people, this course lasts a full day and comes with lunch and a break included
The Deepdale Off Road 4x4 Driving Centre also runs training sessions for those who need to drive off-road as a part of their job. This includes a full syllabus that can be undertaken in the student's own car. All instructors are BORDA accredited - ensuring that you will receive the expert guidance you need.
Whitecliff Off-Road Centre
Whitecliff Quarry, Whitecliff, Coleford GL16 8NB
This centre is a firm favourite among off-road enthusiasts, especially Land Rover and Range Rover fans.
What makes Whitecliff particularly popular is that it runs specialist training sessions for juniors. These are great for children aged between 12 and 17, and cover a multitude of off road driving techniques - suitable for those who are already comfortable driving a car with manual transmission.
Whitecliff Driving Centre is perfect for both beginners and those looking to brush up on their off road driving skills. The centre offers a number of fantastic driving courses including introductory, advanced, and owner-driver courses.
From beginners to professionals, as well as corporate events and juniors, Whitecliff Off Road Centre has something for everyone.
Kirton Off-Road Centre
Kirton Off Road Centre, Gainsthorpe Road, Gainsthorpe, Kirton Lindsey, North Lincs, DN21 4JL
The Kirton Off Road Centre (KORC) is unique in that it allows drivers to bring their own vehicles and drive around the track with just 24 hours notice. This makes it a great choice for spontaneous driving weekends when you have got a spare afternoon or morning.
Situated in Gainsthorpe, North Lincolnshire, the area offers some fantastic scenery over rolling hills and forest as well as muddy plains and bogs to really test your vehicle and off-road driving ability.
Kirton Off Road Centre is particularly popular because it offers specialist, vehicle-themed event days suited to a range of driver abilities - from fully fledged 4x4 vehicles to 'pay and play' quad bike sessions, which can sometimes be the perfect opportunity for a quick adrenaline rush.
Perthshire Off-Road Driving Centre
Fir Cottage, Back Row, Aberargie, Perthshire , PH2 9LY
Perthshire Off-Road Driving Centre offers 'Challenge Days' with a plenty of different activities to choose from, and promises "the driving experience of a lifetime" and the chance to take a drive on the wild side.
Customers have the chance to experience driving quad bikes, eight-wheeled all-terrain vehicles and of course, the iconic off-road vehicle, the Land Rover Defender.
Located near Perth, the centre has 1200 acres of wild terrain for visitors to explore, including mud, steep hills and deep water. These can all be tackled during introductory, intermediate and half-day sessions, depending on your preference and availability.
There are also gift vouchers available which can make for a great present for family members and friends if you are looking to get them something unique for a special occasion.
The Scottish Off-Road Driving Centre
Glentarkie Farm, Cupar KY14 7RU
The Scottish Off-Road Driving Centre is a fantastic choice for experience days and driver training sessions. Having been established for over 15 years, the centre has gained a reputation for excellence, thanks, in part, to its facilities, located overlooking the banks of Loch Leven.
Drivers skilled enough to make it to the top of the centre's hill are greeted with views over the Loch itself and the nearby town of Fife.
Instead of solely offering driving experiences in its own vehicles, this centre also caters for those who want to test the off road capabilities of their own cars, as well as activities such as both recreational and professional 4x4 off-road driver training.
This includes Half-day Experiences and 'Extreme Muddy' experiences - perfect for drivers who want to tackle deep water, gloopy mud, and serious hill climbs that will challenge even the most confident off road motorists.
